\n\tJimmy Kimmel<\/a> kicked off his week in Brooklyn last night with an appearance from New York City mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a>. Kimmel opened his segment with the politician by sharing a series of clips of pundits warning about how Mamdani would bring the city to destruction. <\/p>\n

\n\tAfter Mamdani emerged to massive cheers, Kimmel quipped, \u201cI live in Los Angeles and that is not the reception our mayor would get.\u201d He then asked, \u201cHow is the complete and total destruction of New York going?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou know, it\u2019s proceeding as planned,\u201d Mamdani replied. <\/p>\n

\n\tThroughout the interview, Mandani discussed his \u201ccreative ideas\u201d for the city, including his \u201cParents\u2019 Night Out\u201d initiative, wanting to open a city-run grocery store, building new public bathrooms, people getting down into the sewers, and fixing the BQE. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cPeople are struggling and I have the privilege of having the greatest job in the world,\u201d Mandani said. \u201cAnd whatever I can do to make it easier for people to smile every day, that\u2019s something I want to do.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tKimmel also focused on the mayor\u2019s relationship with Donald Trump<\/a>. \u201cAnother thing that is very unexpected is this relationship that you have with President Trump, which seems to be a very friendly relationship,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cDid you guys hit it off immediately, or is it something that you really went into thinking, \u2018OK, I need to have a relationship with the president of the United States and I think the best way to do it is to charm him\u2019? How did you do that? And can you help me?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSorry brother,\u201d Mamdani replied. \u201cLook, the president and I have many disagreements. One thing we do agree on is this city, how much we love this city, so from that first meeting in November of last year, I was just thinking of \u2018How we can make this meeting not about us, but about New Yorkers?\u2019 How can we spend that time talking about the things that can make life in the city a little bit easier?\u2019 And that\u2019s what it\u2019s been whether we\u2019ve met at the White House at Gracie Mansion.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tKimmel then played a clip of Mamdani and Trump at Gracie Mansion when Trump gave a rambling speech and Mamdani stood stone-faced beside him. \u201cI mean, it is remarkable,\u201d Kimmel said. \u201cI watch that, and I go, \u2018OK, this is not a guy I\u2019d want to play poker with.’\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe added of Trump, \u201cHe just seems to like you and that is it. That\u2019s all that seems to matter I guess.\u201d He asked what Mamdani hopes to gain from his relationship with Trump. The mayor explained that his priority is getting federal approval for his proposed Sunnyside Yard project, a development in Queens that would feature an estimated 12,000 new homes and create approximately 30,000 jobs.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou text with the president, I\u2019ve read?\u201d Kimmel asked. \u201cFrom time to time we\u2019re in communication, and it\u2019s about Sunnyside Yard, and it\u2019s about how we can deliver for the city,\u201d Mamdani responded. \u201cOne of the other things the president mentioned that we spoke about, that I care very deeply about, is Haitian New Yorkers. They\u2019ve had their Protected Status ended, and I really believe we need to do whatever we can so they have stability. They\u2019re part of the fabric of this city.\u201d<\/p>\n
