\n\tChannel 4<\/a> must embrace radical change or face extinction.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat\u2019s the message from Sony Pictures Television<\/a> president Wayne Garvie<\/a>, who said that it is \u201cvery difficult to see how Channel 4 survives in its present form.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking at the Royal Television Society London Convention, Garvie was asked who Channel 4 needs to partner with to survive. He joked: \u201cGod, what a mystery. Sherlock Holmes, where are you?\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe forthright executive, who oversees a production empire behind series including Dept. Q and Industry, doubled down on his view<\/a> that Channel 4 should become part of the BBC\u2019s commercial operations.<\/p>\n

\n\tHe continued: \u201cYou put Channel 4 as the commercial arm of the BBC, doing public service commercial channels, and you bring them together, and Channel 4 could then have its own identity.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI think it\u2019ll probably happen because if not, frankly, it\u2019s very difficult to see how Channel 4 survives in its present form \u2014 and it\u2019s not their fault. The market is changing in every conceivable way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tGarvie was speaking after Channel 4 announced the biggest round of layoffs in its 43-year history<\/a>, with CEO Priya Dogra detailing the need for the company to \u201cown\u201d its future.<\/p>\n

\n\tGarvie is skeptical that Channel 4\u2019s business model will be transformed by in-house production, arguing that it\u2019s \u201creally tough\u201d to launch a successful content division.<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking on the same platform, Heather Jones, chief creative officer EMEA and general manager UK at Hearst Networks, agreed that Channel 4 \u201cneeds to figure out who they partner with and how.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tDogra has previously downplayed the idea of merging with the BBC. Speaking at the Creative Cities stage in May, Channel 4 boss Dogra said it would result in Channel 4 being absorbed by the BBC, leading to the loss of its editorial voice.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThat would be a loss to society, [and] a real loss for the creative economy,\u201d she said.
