Apple software chief Craig Federighi<\/a> said in an interview that he is excited to see what developers will do with the hinge mechanism in the iPhone Duo<\/a>.<\/p>\n He said an API lets developers read the angle of the hinge with an accuracy of around five degrees, and the ability to read what Apple describes as the \u201cpose\u201d of the device \u2026<\/p>\n Apple itself uses the hinge angle in a number of ways in software, including a feature that became an instant hit: the way the outer screen defocuses into a preview of the inner one as you open the phone. He told Donald Decodes<\/a> that the feature is subtle but magical.<\/p>\n The goal was not a fancy animation you\u2019d think about, but something you\u2019d perceive automatically: the screen becomes translucent, a window to what\u2019s below. Fundamental to the device is continuity between your experience when it\u2019s closed and what you find when you open it. Seeing through the screen above to what\u2019s about to be revealed below eases that journey in the most natural way. We\u2019re really delighted with how it came out. It\u2019s subtle but magical.<\/p>\n Federighi says he is confident that developers will do creative and exciting things with the hinge information exposed, just as they have with other iPhone data made available to them.<\/p>\n For most developers [\u2026] we\u2019re focused on communicating the pose of the device: are you in book pose, on-table pose, tent pose? Developers don\u2019t have to work with how many degrees open it is. By communicating the pose, the frameworks can react automatically and deliver a consistent experience across apps. But for creative experiences, like our own animation, developers can get closer to the raw information [\u2026]<\/p>\n We have a long history of exposing gyroscope and accelerometer data to developers, and they\u2019ve made really interesting use of it over time. One of the ways this device expresses itself is through its poses and the hinge, and we\u2019re excited to see what developers do with it.<\/p>\n He said Apple has also worked hard to make it easier for developers to create apps that take full advantage of the iPhone Duo\u2019s capabilities.<\/p>\n We\u2019ve built our platform on high-level frameworks like UIKit and SwiftUI that abstract away many of the harder layout problems, so apps often inherit new behaviors automatically. Over time we\u2019ve added more high-level constructs that adapt automatically, which makes this transition nearly automatic for many developers.<\/p>\n He added that Apple also supports agentic coding tools to enable developers to adapt existing apps almost completely automatically.
