\n\tAdjani Salmon<\/a>, co-creator and star of Dreaming Whilst Black<\/a>, has said he can earn more writing an American comedy pilot than for two full seasons of a BBC<\/a> show in the UK. <\/p>\n

\n\tSalmon made the admission on an RTS London<\/a> Convention panel, during which a discussion emerged over a perceived lack of British investment in TV comedy from the likes of the BBC. <\/p>\n

\n\tSalmon\u2019s web series Dreaming Whilst Black was first a BBC Three pilot and then greenlit to full series, becoming one of the BBC\u2019s most critically-rated of recent years and winning BAFTAs. The Big Deal Films show was picked up by A24 and both seasons are available in the U.S. on Paramount+<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\tSalmon revealed he is now writing a pilot in the States that \u201cmight not come to anything, but that singular check is more than two seasons of a BBC show,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBy that metric financially, why should I make British TV going forward?,\u201d he questioned. \u201cWhich is a shame because I love it. Being in development in two countries gives that creative freedom.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tSalmon said young people making content on platforms like TikTok are making \u00a33,000 ($4,000) to \u00a34,000 per month and won\u2019t be interested in creating shows for traditional players like the BBC if budgets remain low. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLargely mediocre people\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\tJon Thoday<\/a>, the co-founder of UK agency-producer Avalon<\/a>, was critical of a lack of British investment in comedy and branded some industry execs \u201clargely mediocre people.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe said \u201cAmericans are investing\u201d in Britain on shows like Prime Video\u2019s Last One Laughing UK and Sky\u2019s Saturday Night Live UK, but Brits are not, \u201cand that needs addressing.\u201d <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cGenerating revenue for UK PLC is something comedy can do,\u201d he added. \u201cPerhaps people have turned away from it, but comedians will find a way through it anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe said UK comedy used to allow comedians to fail and make a \u201ccreative mess,\u201d but this has largely died out and comedians are choosing YouTube instead.<\/p>\n

\n\tGoing in harder, he added: \u201cThe decision makers have a large number of people in between them and the producers, and the people in between are largely mediocre people who don\u2019t really know anything other than how to manage internal politics.\u201d<\/p>\n
