Stevie Nicks<\/a> didn\u2019t need to spend her entire life worrying about whether her albums were going to sell. <\/p>\n Anyone who has one of the greatest-selling albums of all time under their belt will always have a spot in rock and roll history, but there comes a time when anyone wouldn\u2019t want to be defined by the songs that they started off with when they were with their band. And given how Rumours came together<\/a>, there\u2019s a good chance that Nicks would have wanted to do literally anything else than spend time with Lindsey Buckingham a day longer.<\/p>\n It\u2019s not that Buckingham was ever outwardly malicious in the studio. He knew that there was a time and place for them to make their masterpieces, and while he tried his best to get the best sound that he could out of every single tune that Nicks brought to the table, there were always going to be a few times where he had to wonder if it was worth it to work on songs that were all about him half the time<\/a>.<\/p>\n Then again, I imagine that Nicks having to sing a song like \u2018Go Your Own Way\u2019 and \u2018Second Hand News\u2019 probably wasn\u2019t the greatest feeling in the world. But whereas that kind of animosity was enough to deal with for just one album, Nicks knew that there was no way out if she kept working on records like Tusk for the rest of her life. She had her voice, and she wasn\u2019t going to let Buckingham get in the way of it.<\/p>\n The road seemed set for her to go solo, but no one\u2019s really able to make a great album unless they have a firm basis for everything. Nicks certainly had her fair share of great songs that had been kept under wraps for years, but even if Tom Petty helped her out on tunes like \u2018Stop Draggin\u2019 My Heart Around\u2019,<\/a> she was going to do everything she could to make sure that she was making an album that held together around the song \u2018Bella Donna\u2019.<\/p>\n Nicks had already been through some of her own personal struggles, but this song was the closest she ever came to reporting in her tunes. She had heard about the devastating long-distance relationship her boyfriend\u2019s mother had gone through, with a premise ripped straight out of a romantic drama. She had been involved with a man who was ultimately banished from the country, but the fact that she still held a space in her heart for him was what connected with Nicks the most.<\/p>\n She knew that true love never died, and getting to hear about that kind of story is what made Bella Donna come to life as an album, saying<\/a>, \u201c[The song was written] about my boyfriend\u2019s mother who was involved with a man in Chile during the coup that happened there in 1973. Banished or imprisoned, that was the choice. The love story never really ended \u2013 but she never saw him again. I was so touched by this story of lost love that I wrote \u2018Bella Donna\u2019 \u2013 the moment the poem and then the song was finished, I knew I had the basis for my first solo record.\u201d<\/p>\n Further reading: From The Vault<\/p>\n And given how well it went right out of the gate, it looks like the rest of the world seemed to have the same reaction that Nicks did. Sure, there were still great tunes throughout the rest of the record, and Nicks even managed to walk away with one of her greatest hits in \u2018Edge of Seventeen<\/a>\u2019, but the fact that the album ended up selling over nine million copies all comes down to the work that she did on this one song.<\/p>\n Writing about romance can tend to be messy half the time, but Nicks knew that she wasn\u2019t going to ignore something that touched her soul that profoundly. Those are the stories that no one can turn away from, and she was going to do whatever she could to make music that made other people feel the same way that she felt when hearing about affairs of the heart that are that strong. <\/p>\n<\/p>\n
