{"id":865217,"date":"2026-09-29T22:54:15","date_gmt":"2026-09-29T22:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/865217\/"},"modified":"2026-09-29T22:54:15","modified_gmt":"2026-09-29T22:54:15","slug":"cute-but-unbearable-freeloading-bear-discovered-in-another-la-crawlspace-los-angeles","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/865217\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Cute but unbearable\u2019 freeloading bear discovered in another LA crawlspace | Los Angeles"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">He\u2019s back: the 550lb bear made famous after he took up residence under an Altadena home in November 2025 is wandering the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/los-angeles\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Los Angeles<\/a> neighborhood again after he moved in and out of the crawlspace of another home.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cYellow 2120\u201d, as the black bear has been tagged, was spotted in the crawlspace of a home on Minoru Drive on Monday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Steve Clark, whose in-laws live in the house, told NBC LA that they monitored their new neighbor through security cameras, and tried to scare him away by playing loud music and turning on a leaf blower.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cI didn\u2019t even realize that the bear could get all the way back to that access point. He has to rip out ductwork and do a bunch of damage to get there,\u201d Clark said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Although those attempts to oust \u201cYellow 2120\u201d from his adopted den failed, the bear later left on his own. While the homeowners have sealed up their crawlspace, their neighbors are on alert in case the bear decides to move in with them next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cYellow 2120\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/dec\/09\/california-bear-altadena-home\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">made headlines last year<\/a> when he took up residence under another Altadena home for two months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In November 2025, homeowner Ken Johnson noticed the bear leaving the crawlspace and later contacted California\u2019s department of fish and wildlife for assistance removing it from under his home. Despite sweet-scented lures and ammonia-doused towels, \u201cYellow 2120\u201d remained in place until January \u2013 when Johnson sought assistance from members of the Bear League, a volunteer organization that aims to help humans live in \u201charmony\u201d with the animals, that was able to force the bear out with paintball guns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cHe\u2019s a nuisance and he\u2019s living under my house rent-free,\u201d Johnson told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2025\/12\/08\/a-half-ton-bear-settles-in-beneath-an-altadena-home-thwarting-creative-efforts-to-move-him-out\/\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Orange County Register<\/a> at the time. \u201cWe call him \u2026 unbearable, but he\u2019s so cute. Once he gets out, we\u2019ll call him bearable, but for now it\u2019s unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">After the Eaton wildfire tore through the Angeles national forest and scorched parts of Altadena in January 2025, wildlife \u2013 including several bears \u2013 sought shelter in the community. In the weeks following the fire, at least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2025\/feb\/19\/black-bear-los-angeles-wildfires\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two 500-plus-pound black bears<\/a> sought refuge in homes evacuated during the wildfire. In 2017, California registered 28 bear sightings in Los Angeles county. In 2023, that number rose to 455.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">This month Alex Heeran, a research scientist at the California department of fish and wildlife who studies the human dimensions of wildlife encounters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2026\/sep\/20\/los-angeles-bear-coexistence\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told the Guardian<\/a> that human and bear interactions generally peak every year in late summer and early fall as black bears finish up their pre-hibernation feeding period. This year is on track to be record setting when it comes to reported bear encounters, Heeran said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Black bears \u2013 the only species of bear living in California \u2013 are largely non-confrontational, having killed only one person in the state in recorded history.
