LONG BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — Crews reinforced oceanfront homes and the boardwalk along the Long Beach Peninsula as high tide and powerful waves threatened a coastline already battered by erosion.<\/p>\n

As high tide arrived around 11 a.m. Tuesday, pieces of plywood intended to serve as barriers between the ocean and nearby homes began breaking apart. Waves striking the boardwalk caused the entire structure to shake.<\/p>\n

The high tide was the last expected before high surf and coastal flooding advisories expire in the area. As of Tuesday morning\u2019s high tide, the waves did not appear to be reaching oceanfront properties.<\/p>\n

Homeowners battered by Hurricane Marie earlier this month are reinforcing their properties as Hurricane Polo brings high surf and the potential for more coastal flooding to Southern California.<\/p>\n

The stretch of homes was better prepared after sustaining a glancing blow from Hurricane Marie earlier this month. Thousands of sandbags were distributed to homeowners, while the city brought in 3,000-pound bags to protect the seawall.<\/p>\n

Crews also worked continuously to build towering sand berms along the waterfront.<\/p>\n

The preparations are intended to address an erosion problem expected to continue after the high tide and Pacific storms pass. With a powerful El Ni\u00f1o season in the forecast, more storms are possible.<\/p>\n

Residents seeking long-term solutions met with city leaders on Monday night to discuss possible steps to protect the coastline.<\/p>\n

The erosion has transformed an area that residents said was once a sprawling sandy beach.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sand went all the way back there. Junior lifeguards, we used to run and swim on the beach, and there was no worry about the sand and the water coming up in the houses because there was well enough sand. And over the years, they should\u2019ve been putting it back as it was going away and, you know, this wouldn\u2019t happen,\u201d Long Beach resident Greg Kirkby said.<\/p>\n

In the short term, the city is working to reinforce the boardwalk and repair damage. Officials are also working to bring hundreds of thousands of pounds of sand to the beach to help break the waves.<\/p>\n

The city said it will also work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on a plan to curb erosion and protect oceanfront homes.<\/p>\n
