{"id":865591,"date":"2026-09-30T06:52:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T06:52:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/865591\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T06:52:16","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T06:52:16","slug":"global-oceans-report-delivers-starkest-warning-yet","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/865591\/","title":{"rendered":"Global oceans report delivers \u2018starkest warning yet\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrk8uj000x28oy09kzehs7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/07\/01\/climate\/global-oceans-break-june-temperature-record\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">oceans<\/a> are warming at an alarming pace, bringing far-reaching consequences for which the world is unprepared, according to a report by more than 100 international scientists.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvm00023b6rbe6dyoar@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The tenth Copernicus Ocean State Report, published Wednesday, draws on more than four decades of data from satellites, buoys and sensors to take the pulse of the world\u2019s oceans \u2014 delivering its \u201cstarkest warning yet\u201d about the profound changes they are enduring.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumyyrts00063b6qvcq6l2nu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/cnnweather.onelink.me\/KSXA\/sforlc5x\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\ud83c\udf27\ufe0f Get your local forecast from the CNN Weather app<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00033b6rlydevknn@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe ocean is transforming before our eyes: warming, rising seas and ecosystem degradation are interconnected signs of significant and long-term change,\u201d said Pierre Bahurel, Director General of Mercator Ocean International, the non-profit research institution that produced the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00043b6rg6lb44m9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On top of long-term changes identified by the report, a monster El Ni\u00f1o is adding even more pressure. This natural climate pattern, characterized by warmer-than-average water temperatures along the equator in the Pacific Ocean, is on track to be the most intense on record.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00053b6rmkpk8m5f@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Global oceans absorb roughly 90% of the excess heat produced by humans burning fossil fuels and they are warming at an \u201calarming pace,\u201d according to the report.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00063b6ro7r8vkdc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The rate of ocean warming has doubled over the past 20 years and sea surface temperatures reached record highs in 2023, 2024 and again in 2026.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00073b6rlnzsfqwr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Last year, the world\u2019s oceans absorbed an additional 23 zettajoules worth of heat, setting a new record for the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stthomas.edu\/in-the-news-john-abraham-on-record-ocean-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">ninth year straight<\/a>, the report noted. To put that into context, it\u2019s equivalent to the energy of <a href=\"https:\/\/news.stthomas.edu\/in-the-news-john-abraham-on-record-ocean-warming\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">12 Hiroshima bombs going off every second for a year<\/a>, or roughly 40 times the energy the entire world consumed in 2025.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00083b6rd19ctnou@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            All this heat has huge ripple effects, driving marine heat waves, fueling stronger and more destructive storms, damaging marine life and increasing sea level rise, both by melting ice and because warmer water takes up more space.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn00093b6r3l7asr81@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Global averge sea levels have risen by roughly 0.15 inches a year (3.8 millimeters) since 1999 to make a total of nearly 4 inches, with rates accelerating since 2012 \u2014 threatening the hundreds of millions who live in coastal regions.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000a3b6r6kevecis@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The oceans have also become around 17% more acidic since 1985, as they absorb increasing amounts of carbon pollution.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000b3b6rpgexsawx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ocean acidification is sometimes called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/ocean.si.edu\/ocean-life\/invertebrates\/ocean-acidification\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">climate change\u2019s equally evil twin\u201d<\/a> because of the damage it wreaks on underwater ecosystems, including making it hard for animals such as oysters, lobsters and corals to build and maintain shells and skeletons.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000c3b6reb7cihul@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some regions are particularly stressed by the changes unfolding as the world warms. European seas are under \u201cintense pressure,\u201d said Karina von Schuckmann, a report author and a senior advisor at Mercator Ocean International.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000d3b6r5cm0zy7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Mediterranean and Black Seas both experienced record-breaking marine heatwaves in 2024, with some lasting more than 30 days and driving up water temperatures more than 8.3 degrees Fahrenheit (4.6 Celsius) above average, the report found.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000e3b6rbidtkorq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThese are not isolated hot spells; they are occurring against a backdrop of sustained ocean warming that is changing the conditions marine ecosystems experience,\u201d said Blanca Fern\u00e1ndez-\u00c1lvarez, a report author and researcher at The Mediterranean Institute for Advanced Studies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000f3b6r53pktj3a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Ocean extremes have big impacts on people. The report pointed to Storm Louis in 2024, which brought 26-foot waves to parts of Spain\u2019s coastline, causing one death, widespread power outages and damage to infrastructure.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000g3b6rgen7v17s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That same year, a storm brought prolonged and intense winds to Bothnian Bay, between Sweden and Finland. So much water was pushed out of the bay that sea level plunged 60 inches, forcing ferries to stop operating for 18 hours.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000h3b6r25so9a0n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some of the biggest ocean changes are happening in the rapidly-warming Arctic, where sea surface temperatures have risen by around 7.6 degrees Fahrenheit (4.2 Celsius) over the past four decades. Monthly average sea ice levels fell roughly 190,000 square miles per decade between 1979 and 2025 \u2014 equivalent to losing an area around the size of Spain every 10 years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmumrkuvn000i3b6rz6kmm8dt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At the other end of the world, record low Antarctic sea ice in 2022 coincided with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2023\/08\/24\/world\/emperor-penguin-breeding-antarctic-sea-ice-climate\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first recorded mass breeding failure of Emperor penguins<\/a>.
