South Korea’s Cosmax, a cosmetics ODM company, announced on the 30th that it has developed an artificial intelligence (AI) model that predicts alopecia areata risk using only health checkup data\u2014without genetic testing or biological sample collection\u2014and has completed a patent application.<\/p>\n
Existing hair loss prediction technologies have mostly relied on invasive methods that directly collect biological samples such as blood or tissue, including genetic testing and microbiome analysis. These approaches have been limited by high testing costs and cumbersome procedures, reducing consumer accessibility.<\/p>\n
The newly developed model uses approximately 22 million records from South Korean and Japanese national health screening big data as training data. It comprehensively analyzes a total of 33 variables\u2014including physiological and medical indicators such as blood pressure and liver function levels, as well as demographic and socioeconomic information\u2014to calculate alopecia areata risk. The design reflects the understanding that hair loss is influenced not only by physical factors but also by the complex interplay of living environment and social and psychological factors.<\/p>\n
The algorithm has been pilot-tested on Cosmax’s personalized beauty platform “BYNIQ.” When users complete a health questionnaire, the AI analyzes their alopecia areata risk and recommends different hair care products accordingly. For those predicted to have low risk, it suggests products using “SOYACT,” a functional ingredient for hair loss mitigation; for those with high risk, it recommends solutions containing the premium ingredient “GANOXYL.”<\/p>\n
Scalp characteristic research and hair repair material development<\/p>\n
Cosmax is also conducting personalized hair care research that reflects scalp characteristics across different ethnicities. In a recent multi-ethnic scalp lipidome analysis study, the company analyzed targeted scalp lipidomes from 387 subjects of East Asian, European, and African descent, classifying scalp types into three categories. Through this research, the company identified ethnicity-specific scalp characteristics and vulnerability factors, while also confirming common lipid conditions that worsen the scalp environment associated with hair loss. Based on these findings, the company plans to build ethnicity-specific biomarker panels for product development.<\/p>\n
The company also disclosed results from collaborative research with Seoul National University. It has developed “Corelink-S,” a new material that repairs cystine bonds in hair and improves tensile strength of damaged hair by more than 120%. Last year, the company also conducted the world’s first study using human hair follicle organoids to elucidate the mechanism by which stress leads to gray hair.<\/p>\n
Global collaboration expansion and revenue growth<\/p>\n
Technology development in the hair care segment is translating into revenue growth. In the first half of this year, Cosmax’s hair care segment revenue increased approximately 65% year over year. The company has filed 37 patents in the hair care field over the past three years.<\/p>\n
Global market collaboration is also active. Last year, the company signed a memorandum of understanding with ScienceCo, a global functional materials company, to target the curly hair market, estimated at approximately 17 trillion won (approximately $12.5 billion) worldwide. In July, Cosmax established a joint venture called “TRYNEX” with Fujishin, a Japanese beauty industry distributor, laying the groundwork for entry into the Japanese market.<\/p>\n
A Cosmax representative said, “Based on the super-gap technology and empirical data secured through patents and global collaboration, we will introduce customized solutions by ethnicity and hair type, leading the hyper-personalization paradigm shift in the hair care segment.”<\/p>\n
The AI prediction model is being evaluated as significantly improving accessibility compared to existing methods, as it can screen for hair loss risk using only health checkup data without separate testing.
