{"id":866293,"date":"2026-09-30T20:58:17","date_gmt":"2026-09-30T20:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/866293\/"},"modified":"2026-09-30T20:58:17","modified_gmt":"2026-09-30T20:58:17","slug":"antarctic-winter-sea-ice-falls-to-third-lowest-level-on-record-as-scientists-warn-of-now-problem-antarctica","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/866293\/","title":{"rendered":"Antarctic winter sea ice falls to third-lowest level on record as scientists warn of \u2018now problem\u2019 | Antarctica"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Antarctica\u2019s winter sea ice has peaked at its third-lowest level on record, falling a million square kilometres \u2013 or almost 400,000 square miles \u2013 short of the long-term average, scientists have confirmed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Confirmation of the peak meant the four lowest years on record for the continent\u2019s sea ice \u2013 a vital component of the planet\u2019s climate and critical for marine life \u2013 had all occurred in the past four years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Satellites have been watching the continent\u2019s sea ice since 1979, and this year data showed the sea ice peaked on 14 September at 17.59m square kilometres, about a million square kilometres short of the average maximum or an area roughly twice the size of Spain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Dr Walt Meier, a senior scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Center at the University of Colorado, said the centre had held off in declaring the maximum because there was a \u201clot of potential variability\u201d at this stage in the continent\u2019s sea ice cycle.<\/p>\n<p>Antartica sea ice level 14 September. Photograph: National Snow and Ice Data Centre \/ NASA Earth Observatory<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But the levels of sea ice had been falling since 14 September and he now thought \u201cthe maximum has been reached\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Antarctica\u2019s sea ice goes through an enormous annual swing, melting through summer to below 2m sq km in recent Februaries and then growing through winter reaching above 17m sq km in September.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">But recent years have seen records broken for low sea ice in both winter and summer, raising concerns that global heating could be driving the losses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThe past four winters have had the lowest sea ice maximum on record \u2013 that\u2019s a very clear indication of a system that has changed,\u201d said Dr Ariaan Purich, a Southern Ocean expert at Monash University in Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThis is not a one-off event any more. The sea ice is no longer covering the same extent of ocean that it used to. We are seeing low winter after low winter and that suggests the sea ice is behaving differently because we have warmed our climate.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cThis is not a future problem. It\u2019s a now problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a data-name=\"placeholder\" href=\"https:\/\/interactive.guim.co.uk\/datawrapper\/embed\/a7Nmf\/8\/\" class=\"dcr-olkhl1\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Antarctica\u2019s winter sea ice has been peaking at record lows<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In June, the Antarctic peninsula saw a heatwave with temperatures 20C above normal while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jun\/13\/antarcticas-west-coast-missing-an-area-of-sea-ice-the-size-of-france-as-temperatures-peak-20c-above-average\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">scientists pointed to a France-sized area of open ocean<\/a> where ice should have been.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">In early August when sea ice should be steadily expanding, a large area of the Amundsen Sea to the south of the Pacific lost ice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Purich said changes in winds associated with the El Ni\u00f1o climate pattern in the tropical Pacific had likely played a role in reducing the sea ice in that region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Dr Phil Reid, who monitors Antarctic conditions at Australia\u2019s Bureau of Meteorology, said El Ni\u00f1o tended to change the movement of storm systems around Antarctica leading some to be held in the same place, churning up the sea ice below.<\/p>\n<p><a data-ignore=\"global-link-styling\" href=\"#EmailSignup-skip-link-16\" class=\"dcr-76akua\">skip past newsletter promotion<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-vf9hps\">Sign up to Down to Earth<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-djbwnz\">The planet&#8217;s most important stories. If the water is too warm, you won\u2019t have as much sea ice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Purich said as Antarctica now emerged from its \u201cpolar night\u201d, sea ice reflects the sun\u2019s energy during the day. But less sea ice meant the Southern Ocean could take up more heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Loss of sea ice does not directly affect sea levels as it was already floating, but it can expose ice shelves to buffeting ocean extremes and weaken them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Ice shelves slow down the advance of glaciers and the continent\u2019s vast ice sheet that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/jan\/17\/climate-antarctica-ice-sheets-glaciers-melting-research-affect-sea-levels\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has the potential to push up global sea levels by many metres if it reaches the ocean<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">As well as providing habitats for algae and krill \u2013 critical elements of the continent\u2019s food web \u2013 unstable sea ice has raised concerns for other species, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2023\/aug\/25\/emperor-penguins-thousands-of-chicks-in-antarctica-likely-died-due-to-record-low-sea-ice-levels\" data-link-name=\"in body link\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">including emperor penguins,<\/a> that use the ice to breed and raise young.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">Dr Will Hobbs, Antarctic sea ice expert at the University of Tasmania, said since reaching its peak earlier this month, Antarctic sea ice had been dropping \u201cfaster than usual\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cWe could be looking at another low summer and that\u2019s when things get really worrying,\u201d he said, pointing to concerns about impacts on ice shelves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dcr-1s160rg\">\u201cHow sensitive is the global climate system to this loss of sea ice? We are still working to put numbers on that.
