In 1995, the pinnacle of international yacht racing was dominated by the richest men in the world. That’s when the first all-women crew was assembled to contend for the America’s Cup.

Massachusetts native, Olympian and filmmaker Mary Mazzio followed the women’s journey from Day 1.

“So I was on the 1992 Olympic rowing team with six women who jumped aboard Mighty Mary as grinders,” Mazzio said. “And so I knew about this story even before I became a filmmaker. And from the jump, I was like, the twists and turns of this campaign are insane.”

The story remained largely untold for decades, until Mazzio brought the crew members together to relive their experience for her latest documentary, “Mighty Mary.”

Narrated by Hugh Jackman and Massachusetts’ own Elizabeth Banks.

“This showcases a groundbreaking group of women that defied the impossible. They were rookies. They were going up against the finest sailors, the finest male athletes on the planet.”

In 1994, Amy Baltzell, a Massachusetts native and Olympian, saw an ad in the newspaper to try out for the new all-women’s crew.

“I just remember thinking, you know, I had been an Olympic athlete, and I missed it. I missed being an athlete,” Baltzell said. “I thought, I’m still real fit.”

Baltzell was one of the grinders on the team and was one of 23 women who proved that not only could women compete with the best male sailors in the world, but they could also beat them, too.

“It’s amazing that we did it together,” Baltzell said.

Following the highs and lows of the almost unbelievable journey, the Mighty Mary documentary inspires everyone from young girls to the crew members themselves, reminding them of what they accomplished.

Baltzell watched the film for the first time with her daughters, who didn’t know much about their mother’s story.

“The amount of joy and delight and squealing, you know, and pride for their mother, it was really one of the, ‘If I die, when I die.’ I think back that will flash in my mind is a very highlight in my life: to be seen by my children,” Baltzell said.

And the timing of the film couldn’t be any more perfect.

In the next America’s Cup, starting in 2027, a new rule is in place that every team must have women aboard.

The “Mighty Mary” film is expected to be on major platforms by October 30 for rent and purchase.

Mass.
