Sept. 30, 2016: Europe&#8217;s Rosetta spacecraft crashes into Comet 67P, ending an epic mission"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"elk-32d57da4-bd16-11f1-9c8d-f12e9824a45d\">On Sept. 30, 2016, the European Space Agency&#8217;s Rosetta spacecraft purposely crashed into a comet.<\/p>\n<p>The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24292-rosetta-spacecraft.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24292-rosetta-spacecraft.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/24292-rosetta-spacecraft.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Rosetta spacecraft<\/a> launched in 2004 and spent 10 years chasing down <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28724-comet-67p-target-of-rosetta-mission.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28724-comet-67p-target-of-rosetta-mission.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28724-comet-67p-target-of-rosetta-mission.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comet 67P<\/a>, a rubber-duck-shaped space rock that orbits the sun between Earth and Jupiter.<\/p>\n<p>Rosetta spent the next two years tagging along with the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/comets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">comet<\/a> as it traveled through the solar system. (Image credit: ESA\/ATG medialab)<a id=\"elk-32d57f98-bd16-11f1-b599-67a9d68038d1\"\/>Why it mattered<a id=\"elk-seasonal\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-32d57ffc-bd16-11f1-a797-490f5f4eb7cf-0\">The <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/22562-european-space-agency.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">European Space Agency<\/a>&#8216;s Rosetta mission to a comet was a first-of-its-kind mission.<\/p>\n<p>Not only was it the first spacecraft ever to orbit a comet, but it was the first to follow its comet target as the icy object approached the sun, watching the comet evolve as it warmed up during its journey across the solar system.<\/p>\n<p>            You may like<\/p>\n<p>ESA launched Rosetta in March 2004, with the probe taking a full decade to reach its target: <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28724-comet-67p-target-of-rosetta-mission.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28724-comet-67p-target-of-rosetta-mission.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/28724-comet-67p-target-of-rosetta-mission.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Comet 67P\/Churyumov-Gerasimenko<\/a>, an icy remnant left over from the birth of the solar system 4.6 billion years ago.<\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-32d580ce-bd16-11f1-92c7-ddd03ce05e8f\">The 1.3 billion-euro ($1.46 billion) <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26740-rosetta-spacecraft-comet-arrival.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26740-rosetta-spacecraft-comet-arrival.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/26740-rosetta-spacecraft-comet-arrival.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rosetta probe reached comet 67P<\/a> in August 2014 and spent two years orbiting the comet, capturing stunning photos and <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rosetta-probe-esa-mission\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rosetta-probe-esa-mission\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/rosetta-probe-esa-mission\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">studying its composition and changes<\/a> over time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/flexiimages\/dpnbewsyjn1783958986.svg\" alt=\"Space\" loading=\"lazy\" data-new-v2-image=\"true\" data-original-mos=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/flexiimages\/dpnbewsyjn1783958986.svg\" data-pin-media=\"https:\/\/cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net\/flexiimages\/dpnbewsyjn1783958986.svg\" class=\"rounded-[var(--image--border-radius,0)] w-auto h-7 block w-auto mx-auto mb-4 h-[30px]\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Perhaps the most memorable moment during Rosetta&#8217;s time at comet 67P was the <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27697-rosetta-comet-landing-full-coverage.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27697-rosetta-comet-landing-full-coverage.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27697-rosetta-comet-landing-full-coverage.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">landing of Philae<\/a>, a tiny lander released by Rosetta that <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27761-philae-comet-landing-bounces-first-photos.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27761-philae-comet-landing-bounces-first-photos.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/27761-philae-comet-landing-bounces-first-photos.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bounced several times<\/a> before coming to rest at a strange angle on the comet&#8217;s surface. By September 2016, comet 67P was headed back out to the outer solar system in the direction of <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/7-jupiter-largest-planet-solar-system.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jupiter<\/a> and Rosetta&#8217;s solar panels would not be able to generate enough power to keep pace with the comet so far out.<\/p>\n<p>It took 14 hours for Rosetta to make its slow-motion crash landing on comet 67P as mission scientists <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34254-rosetta-crash-lands-on-comet-mission-ends.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34254-rosetta-crash-lands-on-comet-mission-ends.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34254-rosetta-crash-lands-on-comet-mission-ends.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">watched from a control center in Darmstadt, Germany<\/a>. It hit the comet at leisurely walking pace of about 2 mph (3.2 kph).<\/p>\n<p>The impact Rosetta&#8217;s mission had on comet science, as well as our understanding of the the early composition of the solar system, is still being felt to this day.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can announce the full success of this historic descent,&#8221; Patrick Martin, Rosetta mission manager, <a data-analytics-id=\"inline-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34254-rosetta-crash-lands-on-comet-mission-ends.html\" data-url=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34254-rosetta-crash-lands-on-comet-mission-ends.html\" data-hl-processed=\"none\" data-article-category=\"space-exploration\" data-mrf-recirculation=\"inline-link\" data-before-rewrite-localise=\"https:\/\/www.space.com\/34254-rosetta-crash-lands-on-comet-mission-ends.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">said at the time<\/a> as he declared mission operations ended. &#8220;Farewell Rosetta, you&#8217;ve done the job.
