\n\tAdam Brody<\/a>, who stars as a rabbi in the Netflix<\/a> hit Nobody Wants This<\/a>, recently weighed in on the Israel-Gaza war \u2014 and now a real rabbi who consulted on the series is responding to what he calls \u201cignorant\u201d comments by the actor.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou by your own admission are a relatively ignorant Jew, and your ignorance really showed the other day,\u201d said Rabbi Steve Leder in a message to Brody shared on Instagram<\/a> (below). \u201cHere\u2019s some technical advice: If you know nothing about something, you should say nothing about it.\u201d Brody \u2014 whose other on-screen Jewish characters have included Seth Cohen from The O.C. and Seth Morris in Fleishman Is in Trouble \u2014 has previously said<\/a> he \u201cbarely got bar mitzvahed and retained nothing from it.\u201d (Jews are both a religious as well as an ethnic group.)<\/p>\n

\n\tLeder is the former senior rabbi <\/a>of Wilshire Boulevard Temple in Los Angeles, which is the synagogue where Erin Foster<\/a>, the creator of the hit Netflix series<\/a>, converted to Judaism. He was the technical adviser during season one of the show, consulting with the cast and crew to make sure the Jewish representation, including Brody\u2019s portrayal of a rabbi, was authentic.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAnything in the series that is, for lack of a better way to put it, overtly Jewish \u2014 I did my best to make sure it was done with authenticity and respect,\u201d Leder told the Jewish Telegraphic Agency. Nobody Wants This also shot scenes on site<\/a> at Wilshire Boulevard Temple.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a recent GQ interview<\/a>, Brody said of the war in Gaza, \u201cput me down as thinking it\u2019s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine.\u201d He added, \u201cIt\u2019s awful that it\u2019s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it\u2019s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBrody added that \u201cbetween COVID, a second Trump term, Israel-Gaza, it\u2019s really brought out some different beliefs that I was ignorant to and then disheartened by.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBrody famously stars as \u201chot rabbi\u201d Noah <\/a>in the rom-com, which returns with its third season on Oct. 22. In the show, Noah falls in love with the non-Jewish Joanne (Kristen Bell<\/a>) as they navigate the obstacles \u2014 religious and otherwise \u2014 of their relationship.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn his video, Rabbi Leder said, \u201cYour pronouncement the other day about a \u2018genocide in Gaza\u2019 was truly shocking. Not only because of your misuse and mischaracterization of your use of genocide \u2014 there is no genocide in Gaza, there are genocides in other countries happening, but you failed to mention any of them \u2026 if you\u2019re going to use a word like genocide, you better know what it means. And by the way, being so flippant about a word like genocide \u2014 \u2018hey, put me down for genocide\u2019 like you\u2019re asking for a table for two at [L.A. hotspot] Craig\u2019s \u2014 is disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tLeder stepped down<\/a> at WBT in 2024 after 37 years at the synagogue, a pillar of Jewish Hollywood established in 1929 with the financial support of early moguls including Louis B. Mayer, Carl Laemmle, Irving Thalberg and brothers Jack and Harry Warner. During his time at the pulpit, he oversaw a $150-million renovation<\/a> of WBT\u2019s historic building, supported by a membership base that includes a who\u2019s who of today\u2019s entertainment industry.<\/p>\n

\n\tLeder is a prominent voice in American Jewish affairs, authoring books and regularly appearing as a guest on national news programs. A sermon he wrote on capital punishment was included in an episode of The West Wing titled \u201cTake This Sabbath Day.\u201d (Not coincidentally, he officiated showrunner Aaron Sorkin\u2019s wedding.)<\/p>\n

\n\tIn the comments section of his Instagram post, Leder also defended Foster, saying, \u201cErin\u2019s personal views are clear,\u201d likely referring to comments supportive of Israel since the Oct. 7, 2023 massacre which preceded the current Gaza conflict. \u201cShe is also a true professional who will not allow this to ruin her excellent work on the show.\u201d In fact, Foster has previously said<\/a>, \u201cThis is not the show to tackle conflict in Israel and Palestine.\u201d<\/p>\n
