(ABC News: Dane Hirst)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Sauermann said changes to fire management and other feral species also posed major threats to northern quolls, which are listed as &#8220;endangered&#8221; nationally, and &#8220;critically endangered&#8221; in the Northern Territory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;More frequent burns tend to be worse for the quolls as well,&#8221; Mr Sauermann said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;The introduction of feral predators \u2014 cats especially \u2014 are a big issue.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A range of methods<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Mr Sauermann has set up more than 30 wildlife-tracking cameras throughout the national park.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"A close-up of a heavy-duty piece of technology, a hand presses a button to make the camera equipment record video footage.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/dcc498126de009ff1eb023ebdaab7830.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Filming equipment has been set up in Litchfield National Park, but none of the cameras so far have captured a glimpse of the endangered northern quoll. (ABC News: Dane Hirst)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Food is used to attract animals to these &#8220;camera traps&#8221;, with footage showing a variety of feral animals and other wildlife sniffing around the area.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve gotten quite a lot of buffalo and pigs, we&#8217;ve gotten a fair few cats, but no quolls at all so far,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It&#8217;s been north of 4,000 nights of camera trapping, which means 30-plus cameras deployed for almost a year.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loading&#8230;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Citizen science is also playing a big role in the study, with Mr Sauermann doing everything he can to raise awareness about the plight of the northern quoll.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;In Litchfield where we&#8217;ve got a lot of tourists, I&#8217;ve been putting up flyers around park that say, &#8216;If you see a northern quoll, please give me a shout&#8217;,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve reached out to a number of Facebook groups \u2026 but unfortunately, those have yielded very limited success so far.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"An A4 printed poster pinned up reads WANTED, images of northern quolls sit alongside information about the species.\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/fbf2d6d64d107294e6de1faee7205c78.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">A wanted poster, on display inside the national park, urges visitors to report any sightings of the northern quoll.
