WRIGHT CITY, Mo. (First Alert 4) — Golfers were forced to take cover at the Incline Village Golf Club Saturday evening after reports of gunfire near the course. Police were called after golfers said they heard bullets whizzing by. Several ran to nearby homes for safety.<\/p>\n
The incident happened Saturday evening at the golf club, located north of Wright City in Warren County.<\/p>\n
Golfer describes hearing gunfire<\/p>\n
Scott Moeller plays golf at Incline Village Golf Club about six times a year. He said he was surprised to hear golfers had to take cover from gunfire over the weekend.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s scary because this course is really fun and it feels secluded enough when you\u2019re out here. And there are houses here. Yeah you\u2019d never expect to see that on a golf course, that\u2019s very alarming,\u201d Moeller said.<\/p>\n
A golfer who was on the 16th hole said she heard gunshots Saturday around 6:15 p.m. and then the whoosh of bullets. She and others took cover at nearby homes.<\/p>\n
Nearby residents also heard gunfire<\/p>\n
A homeowner who lives on English Road, north of the golf course, heard the gunfire as well.<\/p>\n
Nearby resident Margie Butler said, \u201cWe heard, we thought was fireworks. And it was very rapid just like you\u2019d put off fireworks.\u201d<\/p>\n
Both the Warren County and Lincoln County Sheriff\u2019s Offices are investigating the reports of repeated gunfire.<\/p>\n
A homeowner in Incline Village said he heard hundreds of gunshots and believed someone was target shooting in the woods nearby. He believed they were using metal targets, and that bullets ricocheted off the targets and went whizzing across the golf course.<\/p>\n
Butler said the gunfire was too close for comfort.<\/p>\n
\u201cI think it was an awful lot of shooting. I think maybe they should have gone to the gun club and shot up there,\u201d Butler said. \u201cBecause that\u2019s pretty close to all the houses around here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Golf course calls it a \u2018non-story\u2019<\/p>\n
Management at the golf course declined an on-camera interview. Operations manager Randy Friert said, \u201cIt\u2019s a non-story.\u201d<\/p>\n
But some golfers and nearby residents find the situation worrisome.<\/p>\n
A nearby resident who declined to give her name said, \u201cIt\u2019s concerning that people had to take safety over gunfire. I\u2019m so thankful that no one was hurt. And it\u2019s concerning that those that own guns and use guns should follow safety rules and precautions to keep everyone safe in the community.\u201d<\/p>\n
Investigators say there were no reports of injuries or damage.<\/p>\n
