A bull moose captured in Troy was euthanized after its condition got worse during efforts to return it to the wild.<\/p>\n
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation said the moose was captured in Troy on Sept. 29 after being seen across Rensselaer County for days. NewsChannel 13 was sent video from a viewer showing the moose walking along Interstate 90 in East Greenbush.<\/p>\n
Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello said the moose was captured by Troy Animal Control and Troy police Tuesday morning, then tranquilized for transport to the Rensselaer Plateau, where DEC said it likely came from.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe had probably about a dozen folks lifting it. It was approximately 600 plus pounds. A yearling buck moose, bull moose. So, it was a rather large animal,\u201d said Sean Mahar, regional director for DEC Region 4.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was a great operation coordinating with the city of troy PD and environmental conservation police officers and DEC wildlife professionals,\u201d said Mahar.<\/p>\n
DEC said staff monitored the moose through the night and saw its condition steadily deteriorate. DEC Bureau of Wildlife Biologists and the state wildlife veterinarian then decided to humanely euthanize the animal earlier today.<\/p>\n
DEC said experts monitored the moose for nearly 24 hours before making the decision and transported it to the agency\u2019s Wildlife Health Unit lab for a full necropsy. The agency said bull moose are entering breeding season and can travel long distances looking for mates.<\/p>\n
DEC asked the public to give wild animals space so they can move out of populated areas on their own.
