\n\tBen Affleck<\/a> used AI<\/a> \u201cfor lots of things\u201d in his upcoming Netflix<\/a> thriller Animals<\/a>, he said Wednesday at Bloomberg\u2018s 2026 Screentime event. Not that he\u2019s going to tell you which things.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI used [AI] for lots of things in that movie. I\u2019m a little bit hesitant to point out what they are \u2014 or even talk about it \u2014 because in my business, we\u2019re trying to foster the illusion of reality, right?\u201d he told Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of like if you went to a magic show and the magician walked out and said, \u2018Just before I start, I want you to know there\u2019s another bunny under here. (And] this guy\u2019s a plant.\u2019 You know, it\u2019s sort of ruined, right? But yes, we did use it, and in fact, I thought it was a good example (of how to use AI ethically) because it\u2019s a very human movie.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tOther humans in the movie include Gillian Anderson, Steven Yuen and Kerry Washington; Animals premieres on Netflix on Oct. 9.<\/p>\n

\n\tAt this point, Affleck and Netflix are deeply in bed together when it comes to AI. Affleck sold his AI company InterPositive<\/a> to the streamer for nearly $600 million, so he\u2019s much more bullish on the technology than your average Hollywood heavyweight. He\u2019s also far more knowledgable.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut word is getting out and panic is subsiding, he said. Once a filmmaker spends time with AI tools and gain \u201ca sense of control\u201d over it, the technology \u201cmoves from this nebulous, abstract, terrifying alien \u2014 you know, \u2018It\u2019s going to kill us all,\u2019 all this propaganda \u2014 and they actually see what it is,\u201d everyone chills out, Affleck said.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt\u2019s another form of computing\u2026 a technological advancement that\u2019s really in keeping with the longstanding series of technological improvements we\u2019ve made in the film and television business,\u201d he continued. Affleck further stated that he doesn\u2019t believe AI will ever provide the ability for a filmmaker to \u201ctype [a prompt] in and make a movie that people want to see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAlso during the conversation, Affleck dispelled the notion that Netflix made him and Matt Damon<\/a> regularly restate the plot of their movie The Rip<\/a>. Affleck says he and Damon went on Joe Rogan\u2019s podcast to explain that their experience with the streaming giant \u201cwas utterly contrary\u201d to the Damon quote that quickly went viral.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSomebody went ahead and did a pull quote, and it got picked up once, and it was, \u2018Matt Damon says Netflix makes you tell the plot in the first five minutes,’\u201d Affleck recalled. \u201cIf you just stop and think about it\u2014 I\u2019m in this movie, I\u2019m directing. Even if that were true, do you think I would go on Joe Rogan and be like, \u2018They made me put all this obvious shit in my movie\u2019? Like, it doesn\u2019t even make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tTo be fair, it was awfully confusing the way Damon said what he said<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cFor instance, Netflix \u2014 the standard way to make an action movie, that we learned, was you usually have three set pieces. One in the first act, one in the second, one in the third \u2014 and the big one with all the explosions and you spend most of your money on that one in the third act. That\u2019s your kind of finale,\u201d Damon said on The Joe Rogan Experience. \u201cNow, [Netflix is] like, \u2018Can we get a big one in the first five minutes?\u2019 We want people to stay tuned in. And it wouldn\u2019t be terrible if you reiterated the plot three or four times in the dialogue because people are on their phones while they\u2019re watching.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201c[Netflix] would never do that,\u201d Affleck said tonight. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I\u2019ve never met anyone who\u2019s had a note that idiotic and brazen \u2014 and I\u2019ve heard of a lot of idiotic studio notes. Idiotic studio notes long predate Netflix.
