Ultimately, more than 250 patients would stream through the hospital’s doors.

“When we got into the ER, it was overwhelming,” Dr. Pearson recalled. “Patients in every corner of the emergency room. There was a large din, like a background noise… just the background noise of yelling, talking, ‘I need this, I need that.’ That memory of the blood on the floor, of the loud din.”

Despite the overwhelming environment, Dr. Pearson describes the hospital’s response as “controlled chaos.” He explains that as a surgeon, your field of vision narrows entirely onto how you can help, causing the surrounding panic to fall away.

Every single staff member at Sunrise Hospital stepped up to manage the crisis:

Physicians & Surgeons: One surgeon triaged patients needing immediate emergency operations directly in the ER, while an emergency physician managed the initial triage out in the parking lot.Anesthesiologists & Nurses: Anesthesiologists focused heavily on managing patient airways, while nurses essentially operated as walking blood banks.Support Staff & Administration: Techs and supply services continuously ensured operating rooms had clean instruments, while the hospital’s CEO stood right in the middle of the chaos, removing institutional barriers so medical staff could work uninterrupted.

The efficiency of the support staff left a lasting impression on Dr. Pearson. When he finally finished operating at 5:30 the next morning and walked back down to the emergency room, it had already been cleaned spotless.

A Patient He Will Never Forget

Out of the dozens of people he treated, one patient in particular remains permanently etched in Dr. Pearson’s mind: a young woman wearing cowboy boots on a gurney.

Dr. Pearson operated on her for five hours. He recalls the exact moment the immense emotional weight of the night finally hit him.

“I remember when I knew she was going to survive, walking and trying to find next of kin or family in the recovery area,” Dr. Pearson said. “And I found her partner and her son. And then that’s when it all hit me and kind of the emotions took over. And it was a very heavy, meaningful experience.”

A Legacy of Resilience

The sheer scale of lives saved at Sunrise Hospital that night remains a remarkable medical achievement. Out of the hundreds of patients who arrived in critical condition, only two people passed away after successfully making it inside the hospital doors—a statistic Dr. Pearson calls “remarkable.”

As another somber anniversary of the tragedy approaches, Dr. Pearson looks back not just with grief, but through the lens of responsibility and professional resilience.

“On the evening before October 1, I think about where I was that night. And I think about… what we’re capable of,” Dr. Pearson said. “You know, bad things are going to continue to happen. And as physicians and healthcare providers in our community, we can answer that call. We can overcome.”

Copyright 2026 KVVU.
