{"id":866973,"date":"2026-10-01T10:56:11","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T10:56:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/866973\/"},"modified":"2026-10-01T10:56:11","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T10:56:11","slug":"small-shark-seen-swimming-in-flooded-streets-of-surf-city-during-noreaster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/866973\/","title":{"rendered":"Small shark seen swimming in flooded streets of Surf City during nor\u2019easter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Listen to article \u2022\u00a00:00 min<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">A shark was captured on video swimming in the flooded streets of Surf City in Ocean County while the region was battered by the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/new-jersey\/new-jersey-philadelphia-weather-rain-wind-noreaster-20260926.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/news\/new-jersey\/new-jersey-philadelphia-weather-rain-wind-noreaster-20260926.html\">nor\u2019easter last weekend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The video was recorded by Drew Procaccino, 66, an adjunct professor at Rider University, around noon on Saturday as the shark swam past his home, he said in a phone interview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Procaccino said Surf City was \u201ctotally flooded\u201d because of the powerful storm, and he lost internet service for around 48 hours, so he and his wife passed time watching debris float by until his wife noticed something that appeared to be a fish.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Then they realized it might be a shark, he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cFirst one we\u2019ve ever seen in front of our house,\u201d Procaccino said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">At first he shared the video with some news organizations, including ABC News, and then he <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/video.storyful.com\/record\/41182\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/video.storyful.com\/record\/41182\">licensed his video with Storyful<\/a>, the social media news agency.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">ABC News said a <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/shark-spotted-swimming-down-flooded-new-jersey-street-during-nor-easter-12145560\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/people.com\/shark-spotted-swimming-down-flooded-new-jersey-street-during-nor-easter-12145560\">marine researcher reviewed the video<\/a> and identified the animal as a smooth dogfish, which can be found along the Atlantic coast from Massachusetts to Florida.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">The smooth dogfish, also known as the dusky smooth-hound or dog shark, on average grow to about 48 inches in length, but have been known to measure up to 5 feet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">Unlike other sharks, the smooth dogfish has flat, blunt teeth for grinding crustaceans and other small prey, rather than sharp teeth for tearing apart animals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">On Monday, the <a class=\"relative z-1 text-blue-mid hover:shadow-lightmode\" data-link-type=\"article-body\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1020394907720215\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/1020394907720215\">Barnegat Lighthouse State Park posted a video<\/a> of a man rescuing a similar shark from shallow water and throwing it back into the ocean inlet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"inq-p text-primary  \">\u201cHero!
