But the paychecks that have powered that spending are starting to lose steam.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupjqz0y00aj3j6swub224jp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Friday\u2019s jobs report could show how much further pay gains are falling behind inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuofh5uu001k3j6sb06cpqwg@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The continued resilience of spending, which powers two-thirds of US economic growth, has been attributed to several reasons \u2013 mostly gains in wealth, but also demographics, post-pandemic savings, inflation effects, and a robust stock market \u2013 but a crucial factor has been the relative stability of the labor market.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuoftyq000253j6sm36271hq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cHaving a job enables confidence to keep spending despite inflation headwinds,\u201d Kathy Bostjancic, chief economist at Nationwide, noted on Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuogky6y002o3j6s15h25rtx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Job growth has improved from last year and unemployment has remained low. However, there are vulnerabilities lurking in this \u201clow-hire, low-fire\u201d labor market: Notably, the paychecks that power that spending are losing their fizzle.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuohda15004a3j6snwj2rffz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            As a result of the energy shock spurred by the US-Israeli war with Iran, inflation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/10\/economy\/us-cpi-consumer-inflation-may\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has outpaced pay growth<\/a> for five months running. That\u2019s expected to extend to six when the September jobs report is released Friday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuohf8n1004m3j6sbhft9cy0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe rebound in inflation is coming at an unfortunate time, because it\u2019s being married with a slowdown in wage growth as the labor market cools,\u201d said Daniel Zhao, chief economist at Glassdoor. \u201cIt\u2019s really adding insult to injury for workers at a time when their raises are getting smaller and their benefits are being cut, too.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuohmuo5004v3j6sw9pnma58@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Average hourly earnings, a closely watched measurement of workers\u2019 pay changes, is expected to rise 0.3% in September, which could bump up the annual rate by 0.1 percentage point to 3.2%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuohrakm005e3j6soi0i5640@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s roughly in line with wage growth seen right before the pandemic; however, inflation (3.4% now) was a different animal then (2.3%). Inflation also likely heated up further in September, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandfed.org\/indicators-and-data\/inflation-nowcasting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">rising to 3.6%<\/a>, according to the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland\u2019s inflation projections. Some economists expect an even higher rate.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuohvn40005w3j6sxd3hfthb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWage growth is moving in the wrong direction as inflation is also moving in the wrong direction,\u201d Zhao said.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2289076266.jpg\" alt=\"Consumer spending has remained resilient despite above-normal inflation.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuohwgu3005z3j6sxtgv3oa5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US economy doesn\u2019t need to add as many jobs as it once did to keep unemployment steady. The labor market is undergoing a <a href=\"https:\/\/edition-prod-cf.sitemirror.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/04\/economy\/us-jobs-report-may-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">structural shift<\/a> as a result of an aging population, increased retirements from Baby Boomers, and a reduction in net immigration.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuoj12mz007p3j6sawm1zyx3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And in September, job growth likely was solid enough to stay the course. Economists project that employers added 94,000 jobs and that the unemployment rate held at 4.1% for the third month in a row. If the payroll gains come in as forecast, it would mark a slowdown from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/04\/economy\/us-jobs-report-august\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">stronger-than-expected 162,000 jobs added in August<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuojxtud00903j6syoqnn713@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Monthly economic data usually is quite volatile; however, the jobs reports this year have delivered a whipsaw effect (the biggest being a 370,000-job swing from February to March).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuojy9l100943j6si62bgr7u@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The choppiness can be attributed to a variety of factors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/06\/economy\/us-jobs-report-february\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extreme weather<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/03\/economy\/us-jobs-report-march\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">labor strikes<\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/09\/09\/business\/bls-preliminary-benchmark-jobs-revisions\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">methodological calibrations;<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/05\/08\/economy\/us-jobs-report-april\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">shifts in hiring patterns<\/a>; as well as quirks in the seasonal adjustment process (a methodology to better see employment trends by removing the influences of predictable or recurring patterns from the likes of weather, holidays, school schedules).\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupfzuyp00173j6sy5freptu@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAugust payrolls benefited from a far more favorable seasonal adjustment than \u201925 and \u201824,\u201d Bank of America economists wrote in a note last week. \u201cThis raises the risk of September payback in seasonal factors, which could be more or less punitive than what we are penciling in.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupg4h95001l3j6scbo2u07t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Seasonal factors aside, August\u2019s jobs report and the following weeks\u2019 labor market data point to underlying strength, Bank of America economists noted, flagging broadening job gains and continued low layoff activity.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupgfg1s002j3j6s630859lt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In August, the variety of industries that added jobs was the widest in nearly two years, BLS data shows.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupgjc0o00323j6swwp0ko4t@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Healthcare, buoyed by an aging population in need of more medical services, has driven much of the employment gains in recent years.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupgz32l001g3j6s8nhdfr8j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That\u2019s expected to continue in September; however, industries such as construction (boosted by data center investment); professional and business services (boosted by temp help and technical industries); and logistics and transportation (boosted by a sharp rise in goods imports), also could post stronger gains, BofA economists noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2289739893.jpg\" alt=\"Construction workers build a new data center in Stone Ridge, Virginia on August 12, 2026.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupilg70008l3j6svgjl2awx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That broader hiring effort was on display in ADP\u2019s latest monthly employment snapshot, released Wednesday, which showed a pickup in private-sector job gains for the first time in three months. Employers added an estimated 90,000 jobs in September, the payroll firm reported.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupivjj6009l3j6swhlgtiop@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            ADP\u2019s monthly estimates don\u2019t always directly correlate to the official jobs report numbers; however, the private-sector hiring report is closely watched as an indicator of the labor market\u2019s trajectory.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupgvbke00163j6sl68ys1id@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Layoff activity hasn\u2019t picked up speed, according to the Labor Department\u2019s weekly reports on unemployment insurance filings. Initial jobless claims have remained muted, while continuing claims for benefits are at their lowest level in more than three years, new data showed Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuph72p300283j6sviqpml1w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Companies also aren\u2019t signaling plans to drastically cut more jobs. In September, US employers announced plans for 43,281 layoffs, down 18% from August and 20% from last year, according to a report released Thursday by Challenger, Gray &amp; Christmas.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphbr2r002x3j6sde703nvw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cCompanies are in a wait-and-see period right now,\u201d said Andy Challenger, chief revenue officer at the outplacement firm.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphf0lr003b3j6sqkhlavkp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            He noted that the typical surge in seasonal hiring announcements hasn\u2019t occurred this year, suggesting employers are taking a cautious approach.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupjxho500au3j6sc1e5n91b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The low trend in layoffs is expected to be maintained through the end of the year; however, claims could pick up next year as a result of higher interest rates and the growing adoption of artificial intelligence technologies by businesses, Pantheon Macroeconomics economists wrote Thursday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphhfc0003l3j6shsgyy3qx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The labor market also is facing plenty of headwinds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphf08i003a3j6s5xzgzkb5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEmployers are facing high energy costs, an uncertain war in Iran, a rate hike that could make hiring more expensive, plus the likelihood of surging healthcare costs,\u201d Challenger said, noting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthcaredive.com\/news\/employers-2027-health-costs-bgh-survey\/828734\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">expectations<\/a> that health costs and spending could increase for businesses in 2027.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphib8f003u3j6scbrs007z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Plus, the \u201clow-fire, low-hire\u201d environment puts the labor market in a more vulnerable, \u201ccalm but fragile\u201d position, researchers for the Kansas City Fed wrote Wednesday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphk8mc00433j6s5ioy0tpt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIn a healthy labor market, low unemployment derives from both a relatively low job loss rate and a relatively high job-finding rate,\u201d the researchers wrote. \u201cWhen low unemployment is driven by a low job loss rate alone, however, the labor market may be more fragile than it initially appears.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphb29v002r3j6spxnvk98n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The Trump administration\u2019s late-July suspension of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/08\/09\/us\/haitians-tps-fear-arrests\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Temporary Protected Status for Haitian immigrants<\/a> has not yet shown up in the payroll data, BofA economists noted.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupid8zt007z3j6slwcdsnew@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            An estimated 200,000 Haitian TPS holders were in the US workforce, primarily in industries such as healthcare, restaurants, transportation, warehousing and retail trade, according to the note.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupht4mw00583j6s354n4gf0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            September\u2019s jobs report could also start to show some ripple effects of the Fed hiking rates for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/16\/business\/live-news\/federal-reserve-interest-rate-september\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first time in three years<\/a>, said Nicole Bachaud, ZipRecruiter\u2019s labor economist.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphxyvi005q3j6sswxx8h01@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Employers and workers alike have already been showing hesitancy as a result of big policy shifts, heightened geopolitical tensions and structural changes in the labor market, she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuphyz1s005y3j6segxy6cbb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWe\u2019ve seen a lot of this breath-holding, walking on eggshells, stagnation taking place across the market,\u201d she said, noting that the impacts and expectations of higher interest rates could further dampen hiring and make workers less apt to change jobs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmupi5axy006s3j6sqkomk1fo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cTypically, when we see interest rates going up, we see job growth slowing a bit, and we haven\u2019t been on a strong, upward trajectory; so, it\u2019s not like we\u2019re slowing off this nice, upward curve,\u201d she said. \u201cWe\u2019ll likely see some sort of reversal from the August gains to something more muted.\u201d\n
