{"id":867333,"date":"2026-10-01T18:02:08","date_gmt":"2026-10-01T18:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/867333\/"},"modified":"2026-10-01T18:02:08","modified_gmt":"2026-10-01T18:02:08","slug":"sbj-presents-val-ackerman-with-first-legacy-of-leadership-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/867333\/","title":{"rendered":"SBJ presents Val Ackerman with first Legacy of Leadership Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">NEW YORK &#8212; Kicking off today\u2019s Game Changers conference, retired Big East Conference Commissioner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/08\/17\/val-ackerman-the-woman-who-put-the-w-on-nba-says-goodbye-on-top\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Articles\/2026\/08\/17\/val-ackerman-the-woman-who-put-the-w-on-nba-says-goodbye-on-top\/\">Val Ackerman<\/a> received multiple standing ovations as she was presented with the first Val Ackerman Legacy of Leadership Award. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">The annual award, which will be presented in her honor annually at Game Changers, will recognize a woman whose career represents the highest standard of leadership in sports. It will honor exceptional executive leadership and vision; integrity and professionalism; lasting contributions to the industry; a commitment to advancing opportunities for women; and meaningful mentorship of future leaders.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">SBJ Publisher and Executive Editor Abe Madkour recounted how a note from Ackerman in 2010 was the genesis of Game Changers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">\u201cA conference focusing on issues related to the business of women in sports is worth exploring,\u201d Ackerman explained in her note. There was value in \u201cbringing people together to discuss the opportunities and the challenges\u201d of women in sports business and that \u201cthe conversation deserved a larger platform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">\u201cAnd like so many things this person thought of over her career, she was right. \u2026 And this room is the result of her idea,\u201d Madkour said to the ballroom full of conference attendees.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">Ackerman, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Journal\/Issues\/2011\/04\/04\/People-and-Pop-Culture\/Ackerman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.sportsbusinessjournal.com\/Journal\/Issues\/2011\/04\/04\/People-and-Pop-Culture\/Ackerman\/\">a member of SBJ\u2019s 2011 class of Champions: Pioneers &amp; Innovators in Sports Business<\/a>, retired as commissioner of the Big East Conference at the end of August after 13 years in that role. She was the inaugural president of the WNBA in 1996, becoming the first woman to launch and operate a women\u2019s sports league.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">Thanking SBJ for the recognition and commitment to the conference, Ackerman also congratulated this year\u2019s class of Game Changers. \u201cIt is completely impossible not to be inspired by all of your stories and I think it\u2019s safe to say the future of the sports industry is in very good hands with such an exceptional group helping lead the way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph sections-awards-and-honors \">She offered five \u201cnuggets of what it takes to be a leader in the sports world\u201d:<\/p>\n<p>Always remember that relationships matter. \u201cSports is nothing if not a relationship business.
