What does that mean for coach Stephanie White?

When Stephanie White was brought aboard as the Indiana Fever head coach in November 2024 for her second stint with the franchise, it was a widely celebrated marriage. It brought back White to the state in which she grew up to coach the biggest emerging star in women’s basketball in Caitlin Clark.

Nearly two full years later, both sides find themselves at an inflection point.

Though the Fever made it back to the WNBA playoffs in 2026, they were eliminated in the first round, losing the best-of-three series to the reigning WNBA champion Las Vegas Aces.

With that development has come questions about White and her future with the franchise.

A first-round exit, even against a championship team led by the reigning two-time league MVP, could reasonably be viewed as a disappointment, especially on the heels of a sluggish 4-4 finish to the regular season that dropped Indiana down to the No. 6 seed in the playoffs and an unenviable first-round matchup. The fact that it came with two of the WNBA’s top three scorers in the regular season in Clark and Kelsey Mitchell only adds to the sting.

What does the earlier-than-expected end to a once-promising season mean for White and the Fever?

Here’s more:

Will Stephanie White get fired?

After two seasons as the Fever’s head coach, it’s unclear what’s next for White and the franchise that employs her, at least in the immediate aftermath of their playoff elimination.

Getting rid of White wouldn’t just be sacking what some believe to be an underachieving coach. White is Indiana basketball royalty, a former Indiana Miss Basketball and Gatorade Player of the Year at Seeger High School in West Lebanon, Indiana, who went on to become a consensus All-American at Purdue and helped lead the Boilermakers to their first and only NCAA championship in 1999.

She’s proven herself as a WNBA coach, too. She was named the WNBA Coach of the Year in 2023 with the Connecticut Sun. She led the Fever to a four-win improvement in her first season (albeit with the benefit of four more regular-season games) and helped get an injury-ravaged team that was without Clark all the way to the semifinals of the WNBA playoffs, where it lost in overtime to the Aces in the decisive Game 5 of the best-of-five series. This year, the Fever went 28-16 in the regular season, a four-win improvement over 2025. The posted their best record in 14 years.

The question, though, is whether White has done enough with what she has and whether the Fever could have done more with a different coach.

Indiana features two of the best pure scorers in the sport in Mitchell and Clark, who combined to average 47 points per game in the regular season while shooting 40.8% from 3-point range, as well as one of the league’s best centers in Aliyah Boston. This season, Mitchell set the WNBA record for most consecutive 20-point games while Clark made significant strides in her third professional season, averaging a career-high 22.3 points, improving her shooting efficiency and cutting down on turnovers.

Taken together, and even on a team with limited depth beyond its top three players, should that have been worth more than a No. 6 seed and a quick exit from the playoffs?

Though the two have had several high-profile altercations on the sideline, White and Clark reportedly have a good relationship. That could affect whether a coaching change is made. For as attractive as the Fever’s top-end talent is, a potential Indiana vacancy would come with some complications. Given the intense focus on Clark − and, more recently, reserve guard Sophie Cunningham − leading the Fever comes with stress and a level of scrutiny other WNBA coaching gigs don’t necessarily have, something White spoke about earlier this month.

“There’s an infatuation with our team, and there’s an infatuation with some of our players, and there’s a lot of negativity that surrounds anything that’s different from what the fandom wants to see,” White said to ESPN for a Sept. 25 story. “And that is challenging as a coach to navigate.”

Stephanie White contract

The terms of the contract White signed in 2024 − including the duration, her total payment and, if applicable, what she’d be owed as a buyout if she’s fired − are unknown.

Christie Sides, White’s predecessor with the Fever, had a four-year contract before being fired in 2024, after her second season with the franchise.

Stephanie White record

In two seasons with the Fever, White has gone 52-36 in the regular season. Indiana’s semifinal appearance last season was its deepest playoff run in 11 years. In her previous stint with the Fever, from 2015-16, she went 37-31, which included a WNBA Finals appearance in 2015.

When her 55-25 mark in two seasons with the Sun is factored in, her career record as a WNBA head coach is 144-92, a win percentage of .610.

White also coached at the college level, where she went 64-97 in six seasons at Vanderbilt.
