9:33 am: Third-year guard Jamal Shead<\/a> has reached an agreement with the Raptors on a veteran extension that will keep him under contract through the 2029\/30 season, agent KJ Smith tells Shams Charania of ESPN (Twitter link<\/a>).<\/p>\n

According to Charania, Shead is signing a three-year, $24MM deal that will go into effect next July. The 24-year-old will earn roughly $2.3MM in \u201926\/27, which is the final season of the three-year deal he signed after being selected 45th overall in the 2024 draft.<\/p>\n

A former Houston Cougars star, Shead has emerged as a regular part of Toronto\u2019s rotation in his first two NBA seasons, appearing in 157 of 164 total regular season games for the team and averaging 6.9 points, 4.8 assists, and 1.6 rebounds in 21.1 minutes per night. As Charania tweets<\/a>, his 354 assists off the bench last season represented a league high, as well as the best single-season mark in team history for a reserve.<\/p>\n

Shead has struggled with his shot in the early stages of his NBA career, making just 38.6% of his attempts from the floor, including 32.2% from beyond the three-point line. However, the organization values the 6\u20191\u2033 guard for his ball-handling, play-making, and defensive tenacity, which have earned him comparisons to some former Raptors point guards, including Kyle Lowry<\/a> and Fred VanVleet<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Assuming the Raptors exercise their team options on Collin Murray-Boyles<\/a> and Ja\u2019Kobe Walter<\/a>, which is a safe bet, they\u2019ll have nearly $178MM in guaranteed money on their books for just seven players in 2027\/28. Shead\u2019s new deal will bump that figure north of $185MM, since a three-year, $24MM contract will require a starting salary of at least $7.4MM.<\/p>\n

The NBA\u2019s most recent projection<\/a> calls for a cap of $176MM and a luxury tax line of $213MM in 2027\/28, so Toronto still has plenty of room to operate below that projected tax threshold.
