Months after holding the largest health care worker strike in Massachusetts, nurses from Brigham and Women\u2019s Hospital<\/a> are set to go on an open-ended strike starting Oct. 14, their union announced Friday.<\/p>\n

Among 4,000 unionized nurses with the hospital, 2,986 voted last week to authorize an open-ended strike<\/a>, with 215 opposed. The nurses are fighting for what they say is a fair contract that protects patient care and respects their expertise.<\/p>\n

Since this strike is open ended, the work stoppage could be longer than the one-day strike the nurses held in July. The union said if the strike is held, it will continue “until Brigham nurses reach a fair contract agreement with MGB.”<\/p>\n

By setting a date on Friday, nurses provided the hospital with the legally required 10-day notice before the strike begins.<\/p>\n

Brigham nurses have called on Mass General Brigham<\/a> to negotiate a fair contract since their July 8 strike<\/a> and the ensuing four-day lockout imposed by MGB<\/a>, claiming the healthcare system has refused to hold additional negotiating sessions since August.<\/p>\n

\u201c4,000 Brigham nurses are prepared to hold an open-ended strike because we are dedicated to our patients and united for a fair contract,\u201d said Kelly Morgan, a labor and delivery nurse and chair of the Brightam and Women’s Hospital Massachusetts Nurses Association Bargaining Committee. \u201cWe have repeatedly tried to get MGB to negotiate and avoid a second strike, but the billionaires who run MGB have shut the door on us. There is still time to reach an agreement that protects patient care and respects nurses. MGB needs to come back to the table and negotiate without preconditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nurses are seeking cost of living increases, affordable health insurance, limits on the use of temporary travel nurses and protections around patient care. MGB says nurses receive annual 5% raises as part of a 20-step wage scale, and that the system proposed a new 2.5% increase for nurses at the top step.<\/p>\n

MGB spokesperson Jessica Pastore said the system remains “committed to reaching a fair and responsible agreement” that recognizes nurses’ “essential contributions, maintains market-leading compensation and competitive benefits, and supports Mass General Brigham\u2019s long-term ability to care for the patients and communities who rely on us.”<\/p>\n

“We take seriously the union\u2019s decision to issue a strike notice and are fully prepared to continue providing safe, high-quality care for our patients throughout a strike,” Pastore said. “While we had hoped to avoid another strike, our teams have comprehensive plans in place, informed by our experience during the five-day work stoppage in July, to support continuity of care across Brigham and Women’s Hospital.”<\/p>\n

The Brigham brought on about 1,300 temporary nurses during the July strike to maintain continuity of care. The teaching hospital is one of the core health care institutions in Boston’s Longwood medical area.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Boston’s hospital ecosystem could see additional disruptions, after Boston Medical Center nurses also recently authorized a three-day strike. No date has been set yet for that action.<\/p>\n
