Darren Aronofsky<\/a> is not the master manipulator he thinks he is. In the Black Swan 15-year anniversary discussion for Vogue<\/a>, the director reminisced with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis about how he tried \u2014 and failed \u2014 to do some Mean Girls pot-stirring shit. \u201cI was trying to be a sneaky director and make them argue,\u201d he said. Mila and Natalie both realized very quickly what I was doing and made fun of me, so it quickly became a joke that we all understood. They\u2019re both very clever and were instantly privy to whatever trick I was playing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Aronofsky tried to do some enforced method acting<\/a> by starting a feud between Portman and Kunis. But Portman and Kunis were already very good friends. In fact, Portman was the one who suggested Kunis for the role of up-and-coming ballerina Lily. \u201cDarren made some comment early on, like, \u2018Ya know, Nat, Mila\u2019s dancing\u00a0so\u00a0well.\u2019\u201d Portman said. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Of course she is! She\u2019s so fucking talented and I love her so much and I\u2019m happy she\u2019s doing a great job!\u2019\u201d Kunis recalled that the two actresses figured out Aronofsky\u2019s ruse via text: \u201d Darren would tell me, \u2018Nat is working really,\u00a0really\u00a0hard. She\u2019s not even taking Saturdays and Sundays off.\u2019 Then I would text Nat and she\u2019d be like, \u2019\u2026No, I\u2019m not?\u2019\u201d The actors said they found it funny how bad of a job the director did trying to make them fight. So that\u2019s nice.<\/p>\n
