4 New Hampshire families file lawsuit to block Trump rule on medical care for transgender youth<\/p>\n

Four New Hampshire families have filed a lawsuit to try to stop a Trump Administration rule that will soon cut off medical care for some low-income transgender youth.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit is asking a federal court to declare the rule unlawful and vacate it entirely. <\/p>\n

The rule to end funding from Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program for transition-related health care for those under 18 was originally announced in August, but it will take full effect on Oct. 13.<\/p>\n

Some of the treatments at issue under the new rule are puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and surgical operations.<\/p>\n

A lawyer for the families in the lawsuit said that none of the clients are seeking or are in need of surgery. <\/p>\n

The lawsuit claims the rule is a product of a political directive and violates the equal protection guarantee of the Fifth Amendment.<\/p>\n

“They’re terrified that there’s going to be other steps that the federal government is going to take to interfere, not just with their ability to access health care, but other aspects of their life, as well,” said Chris Erchull, senior staff attorney for GLAAD.<\/p>\n

Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has claimed that the interventions “carry serious risks and can cause irreversible harm.” <\/p>\n
