ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS) \u2014 Big changes come with the back-to-school season: new grades, new teachers, and new friends.<\/p>\n

For kids of all ages, the adjustment can be nerve-racking. But these feelings of stress are completely normal.<\/p>\n

Experts told News 13 that kids often reflect their home life, so parents can play a big role in their stress levels. Parents should emphasize that they have also had these same feelings and share how they manage them.<\/p>\n

As obvious as it sounds, listening is the most important part.<\/p>\n

“Give kids a choice at every age because that empowers them. It lets them know that their voice matters and that they are part of the conversation,” said Laura Stoia, author of ‘Own Your Power Within.’<\/p>\n

Parents should create a space where kids can feel comfortable sharing their feelings.<\/p>\n

“You don’t have to fix everything that happened; they might just want to come in and share,” Stoia added. “Just listen\u2014listen with your heart wide open\u2014without the idea of fixing everything.”<\/p>\n

If your child does seem extremely down or anxious, however, you should check in with their pediatrician to discuss treatment options.<\/p>\n
