{"id":869607,"date":"2026-10-03T17:34:28","date_gmt":"2026-10-03T17:34:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/869607\/"},"modified":"2026-10-03T17:34:28","modified_gmt":"2026-10-03T17:34:28","slug":"what-a-ct-family-says-a-botched-feeding-tube-insertion-caused","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/869607\/","title":{"rendered":"What a CT family says a botched feeding tube insertion caused"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.codywhitefuneralservice.com\/obituaries\/Irene-S-Perretta?obId=42874907\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Connecticut woman<\/a> who loved to travel the world, survived breast and colon cancer and had both hips replaced was known to \u201cnever let any challenge get her down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Irene Perretta died in 2025 at 80 years old after being treated at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bridgeporthospital.org\/locations\/milford-300-seaside-avenue-campus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Bridgeport Hospital Milford Campus<\/a>, according to a<a href=\"https:\/\/civilinquiry.jud.ct.gov\/CaseDetail\/PublicCaseDetail.aspx?DocketNo=FBTCV266164049S\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> negligence lawsuit filed by her family<\/a>. The hospital is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ynhhs.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Yale New Haven Health System.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The suit was filed by<a href=\"https:\/\/bridgeportbar.org\/members\/?id=59759074\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\"> John T. Bochanis of Daly, Weihing &amp; Bochanis<\/a> of Bridgeport. Emails seeking comment and phone messages were not returned.<\/p>\n<p>When Perretta went to the hospital in May 2024, a physician assistant who was treating her inserted a feeding tube and allegedly \u201ccaused the feeding tube to be improperly inserted\u201d into her \u201cairway and\/or pleural space causing a pneumothorax, collapsed lung and a right sided pleural effusion,\u201d the suit claims.<\/p>\n<p>A pneumothorax is a collapsed lung and it \u201coccurs when air leaks into the space between your lung and chest wall,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/pneumothorax\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20350367\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to the Mayo Clinic.<\/a> \u201cThis air pushes on the outside of your lung and makes it collapse. A pneumothorax can be a complete lung collapse or a collapse of only a portion of the lung.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A pneumothorax can be caused by a blunt or penetrating chest injury, certain medical procedures or damage from underlying lung disease, according to the Mayo Clinic.<\/p>\n<p>For Perretta, this then allegedly \u201crequired placement of a chest tube, and contributing to sepsis, empyema and\/or aspiration pneumonia, as a direct result the decedent sustained additional injury, required further invasive intervention\u201d and she suffered a materially worsened clinical course, further contributing to the deterioration of the her \u201cmedical condition resulting and\/or contributing to her death,\u201d the suit claims.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/civilinquiry.jud.ct.gov\/DocumentInquiry\/DocumentInquiry.aspx?DocumentNo=33447352\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">suit<\/a> alleges that there was failure to properly insert the feeding tube, failure to use the care and skill ordinarily used by hospitals, physicians and physician assistants in Connecticut, failure to properly diagnose and treat Perretta while she was a patient at the hospital and failure properly monitor her condition.<\/p>\n<p>As a result of the alleged negligence carelessness, Perretta suffered a collapsed lung, right side pleural effusion, sepsis, empyema and aspiration pneumonia, according to suit.<\/p>\n<p>Aspiration pneumonia \u201cis an infection caused by inhaling something other than air into your lungs,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/diseases\/21954-aspiration-pneumonia\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to the Cleveland Clinic.<\/a> \u201cThis could be food, liquid, saliva or stomach contents. Many people don\u2019t know they\u2019ve aspirated something. Symptoms include fever, shortness of breath, coughing up blood or pus, chest pain and tiredness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Perretta\u2019s \u201cinjuries and\/or death were caused by the negligence,\u00a0 carelessness and breach of duty of care of the herein \u2026 named defendants through its agents, servants and employees,\u201d the suit alleges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBridgeport Hospital extends our sincere condolences to the patient\u2019s family and loved ones as they grieve this loss,\u201d a\u00a0spokesperson for Yale New Haven Health said,<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur caregivers work hard to provide compassionate, high-quality care to every patient we serve. Because this matter is in litigation, we will address the allegations through the appropriate legal channels,\u201d the spokesperson said.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/civilinquiry.jud.ct.gov\/DocumentInquiry\/DocumentInquiry.aspx?DocumentNo=33673952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">motion filed on behalf of Yale New Haven Health<\/a> by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.carmodylaw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Carmody Torrance Sandak &amp; Hennessey LLP<\/a> seeks to have the suit dismissed. The motion says that Connecticut law \u201cprovide two bases for which this case must be dismissed as to a physician assistant, including that it demands that the person be served in-hand or at his usual place of abode. He was not.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also, the law \u201cprovides that dismissal is the mandatory remedy where the plaintiff fails to attach a letter from a similar health care provider \u2026 that evidences the defendant provider\u2019s alleged departure from the applicable standard of care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Because the physician assistant is a specialist in Critical Care Medicine, \u201cand the plaintiff failed to provide an opinion letter from a PA specializing in Critical Care Medicine, dismissal of this case as to\u201d that physician assistant is the mandatory remedy, the motion says. The letter also lacked information, failing \u201cto meet the requisite factual detail as to how (the physician assistant) deviated from the subject standard of care in his treatment of the plaintiff\u2019s decedent,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/civilinquiry.jud.ct.gov\/DocumentInquiry\/DocumentInquiry.aspx?DocumentNo=33673952\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the motion says.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Further, the motion asserts, the physician assistant was no longer an employee of Bridgeport Hospital at the time \u201cthe summons and complaint were erroneously served\u201d there.<\/p>\n<p>Perretta\u2019s obituary said she \u201cwas a role model to all who knew her. Her smile lit up the room and made others feel welcome, happy and loved,\u201d and was a volunteer for many organizations.<\/p>\n<p>This started in high school \u201cwith candy striping at <a href=\"https:\/\/stvincents.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">St. Vincent\u2019s Hospital<\/a>,\u201d and Perretta also had served as a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, helped in a grade school library, and following her retirement had worked at St. (Barnabas) Church \u201cassisting with prepping for bake sales, festivals and serving at church luncheons.\u201d The obituary noted that\u00a0 \u201ceach of these experiences\u201d led her to dear friends.<\/p>\n<p>Perretta also had a career that included working for Travelers Insurance, then Elizabeth Arden in Stamford, the obituary said. \u201cShe travelled to many places throughout her life including Bermuda, Italy, Greece (she loved Mykonos and Santorini), London, Paris and several states in the U.S.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A Connecticut woman who loved to travel the world, survived breast and colon cancer and had both hips&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":869608,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[59],"tags":[207599,366587,15861,8609,97,252,5123,253,1493,6347,955,183216,25555,104926,25554,2480,131985],"class_list":["post-869607","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-health-care","tag-bridgeport","tag-carmody","tag-ct-news","tag-death","tag-health","tag-health-care","tag-health-news","tag-healthcare","tag-hospital","tag-insider","tag-medical","tag-milford","tag-negligence","tag-new-haven","tag-wrongful-death","tag-yale","tag-yale-new-haven-health"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/869607","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=869607"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/869607\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/869608"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=869607"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=869607"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=869607"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
