If Caitlin Clark is Charlie Brown, and the basketball is the football, then Lucy is the WNBA. You know the bit. She holds it. He runs. She pulls it away. He ends up on his back, staring at the sky, wondering what he did wrong this time.

The Fever were eliminated Thursday night in Las Vegas, 94–83, the last game of a three-game series. The officiating was bad. The coaching was just as bad. They fought anyway, which is what you do when you’ve already decided the night isn’t going to love you back. All the planets had to line up for Indiana to steal that one, and this was the year they finally did — back in February, when it couldn’t help them.

Despite having Caitlin Clark healthy for this postseason, and her putting up MVP numbers in Game 2, the Fever never had much of a chance of walking into a semifinal. Clark was probably the only person in that building — heck, who am I kidding, on the planet — who still thought they’d beat the Aces. That’s the part of her I trust. Not the logo three. The vision. She can read a room, read a floor, and see a win that isn’t there yet. Even when it doesn’t come. They were tied after one. They got within two late. Then the shots quit, and neither she nor Mitchell could have thrown a rock into the ocean if you’d walked them down to the water and pointed.

I don’t blame Clark or Mitchell for Thursday. Their bodies showed up. Their heads were still in the locker room, waiting for somebody to tell them the night was over. I don’t think anybody in that building believed they were beating the Aces. It was five-against-eight for most of it. Calling the officiating bad is the understatement of the year. They weren’t just bad. They were predictable, and predictable is worse. I don’t want this piece to be about the whistle. That’s its own story. I only need you to see what took the wind out of them, and why even an unflappable Caitlin Clark couldn’t get past the voices in her own head for the last forty minutes of 2026.

On Tuesday night, Game 2, A’ja Wilson and Sophie Cunningham got tangled in the paint. That’s the polite version. Wilson went through her. Cunningham hit the floor. Cunningham got the foul. Watch it and decide for yourself.

https://youtube.com/shorts/B7j0Bo_8iF0?si=sp64r_05fMztr-hK

Wilson getting that whistle wasn’t a surprise. It was the pattern. What came after is what put the lid on the box the Fever will sit in for the rest of the year. A fan stood up in his row, pointed, and appeared to say, “That was on you.” Wilson took offense and went to him.

That part matters. She went to him. He did not come onto the court. And this is where the league’s story gets thin enough to see through, which is why people have started asking, out loud, whether the rulebook still means what it says.

The league called the floor under her feet an escape lane. An escape lane is a strip of floor so a player doesn’t crash into the seats chasing a loose ball. Fine. Give them that. Call it an escape lane.

Wilson was not chasing a ball.

The play was over. She turned, walked to the row, and pointed at a fan who was already back in his seat. From the video, it looks like the woman beside him got him to sit. He never made a move for the floor. Wilson closed the distance. They called that patch of court an escape lane so the stands rule wouldn’t apply.

Some escape.

She got a technical. For what? Walking into the lane they just said she was allowed to use? The conduct and the category are two different things. The conduct was going at a fan. The category is how they kept it a technical instead of an ejection.

Was that one night enough to hand the Aces Game 3? I can’t say. Losing teams always have a whistle story, and sometimes the whistle earns it. What I can say is that nothing happened beyond the technical. No fine that changed the week. No game she had to miss. If the calls keep coming your way, and the extra stuff keeps getting explained instead of punished, you stop worrying about the rulebook.

Put yourself in that locker room. First thought is, how do you beat that? I’ll tell you where you start.

Coaching.

The Fever have too many holes to plug in one night. Clark, Mitchell, and Boston can only do so much. I’m not sure a better coach wins that game. What I am sure of is that the one they had didn’t change it. Stephanie White stood there, arms crossed, and had no answer for Wilson’s 36. The Fever weren’t buried until the fourth. After one quarter, it was tied, 31–31, and Clark already had 11 of her 18. Somewhere between that horn and the final seconds, her race changed. She was doubled, sometimes tripled, guarded the length of the floor. Pressure doesn’t faze her. She wants the ball. She still went 2-for-12 from three. That isn’t only a cold hand. That’s a player who stopped trusting the whistle, and then stopped trusting her own shot.

I’ve said it before. This is not the same Caitlin Clark we watched in college, or in 2024. The Aces didn’t have to take the ball out of her hands. Whether that was a choice, a habit, or a coach who ran out of answers is the next piece. This one only had to get us to the bench.

I don’t know about you, but I’m glad it’s over.
