Kelsey Mitchell’s future with the Indiana Fever has suddenly become one of the biggest questions of the WNBA offseason, and her latest comments have offered an unusually candid look at what it is like to play alongside Caitlin Clark.

Mitchell has spent her entire WNBA career in Indiana after being selected No.2 overall in the 2018 draft.

Caitlin Clark leaves fans confused after shoving rookie Raven Johnson

For years, she was the centerpiece of a struggling franchise, carrying much of the offensive responsibility before the Fever eventually landed Aliyah Boston and Clark with consecutive No.1 picks. Now, however, the 30-year-old guard is an unrestricted free agent.

Her comments following Indiana’s playoff elimination suggested that her decision will involve much more than money or basketball.

“Showing up every day to compete for fans that may or may not like you is hard. I don’t think people understand that,” Mitchell said at the Fever’s end-of-season press conference.

She then explained how playing alongside Clark has brought an additional layer of attention to every member of the Indiana roster.

“I think having to show up for people that don’t look at you and have, you know, the star eyes when they see me,” Mitchell said. “But playing with CC and having the eyes that she got, we get a lot of flak just for being on her team.

“So I think that comes with a lot too, and I think that people gotta give us grace. I think that this organization is unbelievable, man, but I think that when it comes to really trying to be yourself, it hasn’t always been easy. That’s all I’ll say.”

Mitchell’s remarks may not amount to a declaration that she wants to leave the Fever. In fact, she has repeatedly spoken positively about the organization and her teammates.

But they do demonstrate that the enormous attention surrounding Clark has affected the wider group.

Free agency decision comes after career-best season

The timing is particularly significant because Mitchell has arguably never been more valuable to Indiana.

She averaged 24.7 points per game during the 2026 regular season, shooting 50.9% from the field and 45.0% from three-point range. She played all 44 regular-season games and became one of the league’s most productive offensive players.

Her postseason performances were strong, too. Mitchell scored 26 points in Indiana’s 99-89 Game 2 victory over Las Vegas to force a decisive matchup, before leading the Fever again with 23 points in the season-ending 94-83 defeat.

The Fever ultimately lost the first-round series 2-1, ending a season in which Indiana finished 28-16 and earned the No.6 seed. That means Mitchell heads into free agency with significant leverage.

She has also made it clear that she intends to consider what is best for her rather than automatically returning to the franchise where she has spent nine seasons.

“I think I have to be selfish. I think that’s where I am in my career, about what I probably need and what’s probably best for me,” Mitchell said.

“I’ve got to be selfish where my career is going, in terms of what’s important to me. Whether it be winning, whether it be my own individual success.

“I worked my tail off to be here, so whatever I do, it’s gonna come from a selfish standpoint. I’ll be honest about that.”

Fever general manager Amber Cox has made no secret of the organization’s desire to retain Mitchell, saying that the team hopes to keep her in Indiana for the remainder of her career.

“I mean, Kelsey is obviously a major priority. She has a lot of equity in this franchise and has put in a lot of time,” Cox said. She also indicared the Fever hope to build on the partnership between Mitchell and Clark.

The difficulty is that Mitchell’s concerns go beyond basketball. The Fever have been surrounded by controversy throughout the season, with incidents involving fans, opposing players and social-media criticism repeatedly becoming part of the conversation.

During the playoffs, A’ja Wilson confronted a fan during Game 2, while other incidents involving Fever games had already generated significant attention. Mitchell said the online side of the experience has been particularly difficult.

“I don’t think people really understand how much we endured,” she added. “If I showed y’all my DMs about the hate and all of the stuff that comes with being a professional athlete but specifically being an Indiana Fever basketball player, it’s a lot that goes into that.”

Those comments stand in contrast with Cox’s defense of the Fever fanbase. The general manager said that “attacks on our fan base have no basis in reality,” creating an obvious difference in how the experience is being perceived by the players and the front office.

That divide could become an important part of the offseason conversation. Still, it would be premature to conclude that Mitchell is leaving because of Clark.

The two have developed into one of the WNBA’s most productive scoring combinations, and their partnership has been a major reason for Indiana’s improvement.

The Fever also have a clear incentive to retain an elite veteran who can shoot at a high level while taking some of the offensive burden away from Clark. Mitchell, meanwhile, has earned the right to examine every option.

After nine seasons with one franchise, a career-best statistical year and a growing role alongside one of the sport’s biggest stars, her decision will likely come down to what environment she believes best fits the next stage of her career.

For the Fever, keeping Mitchell would preserve the core of a team that believes it can eventually compete for a championship. For Mitchell, however, her latest comments make clear that basketball will not be the only consideration.

Kelsey Mitchell’s future with the Indiana Fever has suddenly become one of the biggest questions of the WNBA…

[73
99,434
post-870723","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wnba","tag-sports","tag-wnba
["GET
