Aaron Sorkin says \u201cit never occurred\u201d to him that Jesse Eisenberg would not be joining him<\/a> on The Social Reckoning.<\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning screenwriter has previously said that he spent three days trying to convince Eisenberg<\/a> to reprise his role as Mark Zuckerberg from the 2010 hit The Social Network for its sequel, but that the actor was not persuaded by anything \u2014 especially not money.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew what the studio was offering him to do it, but money does not motivate Jesse. It\u2019s infuriating,\u201d Sorkin told Entertainment Weekly<\/a> in an interview published Saturday. \u201cIf anything, money is a disincentive for him. It\u2019s admirable. He\u2019s very concerned about raising his kids with too much money.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sorkin, who is stepping in to direct The Social Reckoning after David Fincher helmed the 2010 film,<\/a> said that he was close to finishing the script for the new movie when he ran into Eisenberg at a party and told him that he planned to send it to him.<\/p>\n

Eisenberg \u201csmiled and nodded, and I sent it to him,\u201d Sorkin said. \u201cIt never occurred to me that he wouldn\u2019t want to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Over the next three days, Sorkin said that he planned his arguments<\/a> to convince the Oscar-nominated actor to change his mind. \u201cThis is the only time I\u2019ve written myself an outline. I don\u2019t do it for the movies, but I did it for my conversations with Jesse,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was arguments for why he should do it. They included, \u2018We already know you\u2019re going to be great because you were already once.\u2019 You know, \u2018Here are the great moments that you\u2019re gonna get to play in the movie.\u2019 And I laid it out for him,\u201d Sorkin recalled.<\/p>\n

In the end, Eisenberg still ended up turning down the role<\/a>. However, Sorkin said that he told him that their conversations made him \u201ccome closer to changing my mind than I thought you were going to,\u201d which the screenwriter said was enough for him.<\/p>\n

Jeremy Strong will be taking over for Eisenberg<\/a> in the role of Zuckerberg for Sorkin\u2019s new movie, which comes out October 9. The movie also stars Mikey Madison and Jeremy Allen White.<\/a><\/p>\n

When asked about declining the role, the A Real Pain actor also reflected on his conversations with Sorkin,<\/a> but concluded that he no longer wants \u201cto be associated with that character.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s an honor to speak to Aaron in any capacity, because he\u2019s so articulate and charming and so bright,\u201d Eisenberg told Variety in June.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe talked about doing the movie for several days,\u201d he said. \u201cThe way Aaron speaks, he speaks so wonderfully, as he writes, that, in a way, if you\u2019re not going to do something with him, it feels almost like you\u2019re letting down America.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cI just told him I’m moving in different directions in my life, and you know, what he said sums it up nicely: I don’t want to be associated with that character. But all of my reasons for not wanting to do the movie have nothing to do with how wonderful the movie is, and will be, and I\u2019m sure is already.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later?
