“I think we stayed like very cool, like level-headed,” Fiebich told reporters postgame.

But someone can be simultaneously externally composed and internally rattled. Those are not mutually exclusive.

The Liberty played an even first half––outshooting the Dream 43.8% from the field to 34.3%–– and led 40-37 going into the half. The team unraveled in the next ten minutes, and turned the ball over nine separate times in the third quarter. The Dream scored 32 combined points off those 21 Liberty turnovers, slightly under 35% of Atlanta’s total points. As a result, the Liberty lost the possession battle and that cost them the game.

Stewart agreed with Ionescu but sent a slightly different message.

“We know what what Atlanta likes to do,” she said. “[A] similar situation happened with us at home [during the regular season] when they came out in the third, and they just kind of raced it down our throats, and we need to be better. We need to be more prepared and expect that and change it next game.”

More prepared? That was a shock especially since the message going into this series was how the Dream turn teams over. Stewart shared a specific stat from the Liberty’s final team film session before the group got on the plane to Atlanta. “They’re first in wing steals,” she said on Friday. “So basically, they’re jumping the passing lanes and really trying to get it off that first action.”

Why did the the Liberty struggle with the very component of this matchup that the team itself stressed heading into Game 1? Fiebich provided some more clarity on this very head scratcher. “We expected some things,” she said. “That they were doing some things in this game, [it] didn’t happen. So we just gotta adjust.”

In other words: the Liberty prepared for something different than what the Dream actually executed on Sunday afternoon.

Marine Fauthoux, who played a major role in the Liberty’s fourth quarter comeback that wasn’t enough, believed that the Dream played with more energy than the Liberty. Han Xu, who had a fever the day before the game and missed practice, explained to a scrum of reporters that the Dream are very different from the Minnesota Lynx, the Liberty’s previous opponent from round 1.

“They pressure a lot,” Han said postgame. “And they have three top players, and their defense are their three top players. So they can switch, and then they play just physical and try to steal the ball. So they give us a lot of pressure, better than the last team. So we need to learn and improve.”

When an opponent makes an adjustment like the Dream clearly did, it’s up to the Liberty to be able to counter with one in real time. This is what the Liberty’s third quarter looked like.

After two straight turnovers from Jonquel Jones and Pauline Astier to begin the third, head coach Chris DeMarco called a timeout. At the time, the Dream were leading 46-43. Following that first timeout, the Liberty turned it over five more times and the Dream’s lead ballooned from just 3 points to 11 in less than four minutes. Once Jordin Canada got a steal off an errant Fiebich pass, and drew an and-one, DeMarco called yet another timeout with 4:19 left in the third quarter.

The first possession following that second time out of the quarter resulted in another Canada steal and score. And then with under two minutes left in the quarter, Canada stole the ball and scored again. The Liberty entered the fourth quarter down 14 points after they began the third quarter with a three point lead.

New York entered the fourth quarter in a quagmire, and their offense was stuck in the mud for most of that third according to Jones. She explained that the Liberty found a way to adjust within games to what the Minnesota Lynx threw at them during that first round. That didn’t happen on Sunday in Atlanta.

“I think we just have to move the ball from side to side,” she said. “I think some of the things that–– and this is not me like trying to point a finger or anything–– I just think that there’s things that we can run to kind of get the ball a little bit more flow, a little bit more energy. And I think at times we were kind of a little bit stagnant with what we were running. So just being a little bit more conscious of that and understanding as a team that we’re way better when we’re getting them off from side to side.”

To be clear, this is typically how the Liberty prior to 2026 would handle teams constructed like the Dream in addition to the Kelsey Plum version of the Las Vegas Aces. To counter teams that thrive in transition, the Liberty need to use their above average basketball instincts to move the ball. That’s the formula.

Ionescu, who had her most efficient shooting game since August 11, and was even more efficient than her September 29 performance against the Lynx, spoke about this as well. She was the Liberty’s leading scorer who tallied 27 points on 10-of-20 shooting including three three-pointers.

She said none of that mattered. Here’s what did instead.

“I need to find a way to get everyone else in in better positions,” she said. “I had one assist, so I think I got to find ways to get [Jones] going a little bit more, [Stewart] going, continue to find [Fiebich] and [Astier], and that’s my job, and I’m going to do that next game.”

But let’s shift to Ionescu for a moment. Her performance in this game raised some questions about what actually should be her pro shot diet. She shot 50% from the field and 60% of her attempted shots were twos and 40% of her attempts were threes. That shot diet is eerily similar to what her final year in college looked like where approximately 63% of Ionescu’s shot attempts were twos and 37% of her shot attempts were threes.

Ionescu’s attempts during the 2026 regular season weren’t close to that. 48% of her total shot attempts were twos, and she attempted 52% of her total shots from deep. Let’s put a pin in that for now.

Anyway, amid the stagnation and turnovers, the Liberty still had a chance to win this game in the fourth quarter. Fauthoux, who hadn’t played in non-garbage time minutes since August, was thrown out onto the floor when the Liberty’s other bench guards and wings just didn’t have it.

While Fauthoux didn’t score in her 12 minutes on the floor, she finished with a plus 3 +/- in addition to three assists and two rebounds. When Fauthoux was on the floor, the Liberty turned it over just twice and neither of them led to points on the other end.

2026 WNBA transaction tracker

“She really sees the floor,” Fiebich said about Fauthoux. “She is smart, and then she like always plays with a lot of energy, a lot of effort. She’s out there talking, hustling, and just gives us a little bit of a spark which is really nice.”

With the rookie French point guard on the floor, the Liberty were able to get within 5 points with under a minute left in regulation. Ionescu hit a 30-foot three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining, and then following the shot the Dream went on a 5-0 run to seal the game. The Liberty didn’t score again.

Where does this leave New York? And what did DeMarco say about where the issues were and what he needs to do to put his team in better situations throughout the course of a game, especially when the Liberty struggled to find a pattern interrupt throughout the 9 turnover third quarter. The Liberty just struggled to change their on court behaviors when it came to protecting the ball.

“This is what they do, this is [the Dream’s] identity,” DeMarco said when he was asked to reflect on what went wrong. “It’s not going to change for this series and we have to be prepared, and the third quarter got away from us a little bit.”

![""]("https://www.newsbeep.com/us/wp-content/uploads/2026/10/unisex-premium-sweatshirt-black-zoomed-in-69d805eea2e49-1024x1024.webp")
