Luke Grimes said he hasn\u2019t spoken to his \u201cYellowstone\u201d co-star Kevin Costner since the Oscar-winning actor exited the series in 2024.<\/a><\/p>\n

But he noted that there\u2019s no bad blood between them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have never spoken to Kevin since we stopped working together,\u201d Grimes told USA Today <\/a>in an interview Monday. \u201cNot for any other reason other than we are both just busy guys and life moves on.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grimes, who plays Kayce Dutton in the \u201cYellowstone\u201d universe, doubted that Costner will ever reprise his role as his on-screen dad, John Dutton, on \u201cMarshals,\u201d the CBS spinoff.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf there was a flashback, I would want it to be with [Kayce\u2019s wife] Monica than John,\u201d Grimes said. \u201cI think that would be more poignant to the character, but we will see.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s been no conversation, but, I sure would love it,\u201d he continued. <\/p>\n

He noted of actress Kelsey Asbille, who played Monica in \u201cYellowstone,\u201d \u201cI love working with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grimes is the star of \u201cMarshals\u201d \u2014 the fourth television show in the \u201cYellowstone\u201d franchise \u2014 which follows Kayce as he joins an elite U.S. Marshals unit in Montana. It\u2019s currently in its second season.<\/p>\n

The actor doubted Costner would make an appearance in his show \u201cMarshals,\u201d a \u201cYellowstone\u201d spinoff on CBS. Matthias Clamer\/CBS<\/p>\n

He said he would rather his on-screen \u201cYellowstone\u201d wife, Monica (played by Kelsey Asbille, pictured above) make a flashback than Costner\u2019s John Dutton character. CBS<\/p>\n

Costner\u2019s character was shockingly killed off <\/a>in the fifth and final season of \u201cYellowstone\u201d amid rumors of a falling out<\/a> between him and series creator Taylor Sheridan.<\/p>\n

Sheridan made rare comments<\/a> about Costner\u2019s departure from the hit Western in June, sharing that the \u201cBodyguard\u201d star wanted off of the show after three seasons, but was pressured to stay for two more.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was in his contract. In my mind, that\u2019s when his youngest son takes over [on the show]\u2026 But the network was so scared of not having Kevin be a part of it, even though Kevin was ready,\u201d Sheridan said on the \u201cBill Simmons Podcast.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was ready to go,\u201d he continued. \u201cHe had other things he wanted to do.\u201d<\/p>\n

Series creator Taylor Sheridan said Costner (pictured above in November 2025) wanted off the show after three seasons but was pressured to stay for two more seasons after \u201cYellowstone\u201d became a massive hit. Getty Images for The Art of Elysium<\/p>\n

Costner, 71, extended his tenure on the series because it \u201cwas such a behemoth,\u201d Sheridan noted.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was such a huge hit,\u201d he stressed. \u201cThe notion of giving up a hit before it had run out of juice to squeeze is very foreign to a network.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was even pressure from some of the cable companies wanting to put it in their deals, that they were going to get an X-number of seasons of \u2018Yellowstone\u2019 to re-up what this cable company is,\u201d he continued. \u201cThat\u2019s the power of a really big hit show.\u201d<\/p>\n
