{"id":873713,"date":"2026-10-07T08:14:19","date_gmt":"2026-10-07T08:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/873713\/"},"modified":"2026-10-07T08:14:19","modified_gmt":"2026-10-07T08:14:19","slug":"former-chemical-company-hercules-to-pay-4-5-million-for-alleged-pollution-at-new-jersey-sites","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/873713\/","title":{"rendered":"Former chemical company Hercules to pay $4.5 million for alleged pollution at New Jersey sites"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A former chemical company will pay New Jersey more than $4.5 million to settle pollution claims at four vacated sites in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Hercules, Inc. <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.njoag.gov\/ag-davenport-dep-commissioner-potosnak-announce-two-natural-resource-damages-settlements\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">agreed to the sum<\/a> to resolve a 2007 lawsuit concerning alleged contamination at its former plants in Middlesex, Morris and Gloucester counties. The manufacturer, which was acquired by Ashland, Inc. in 2008, also will pay $50,000 to support watershed and habitat conservation at select areas on these properties, including 110 acres on the Gibbstown Superfund Site near the Delaware River.<\/p>\n<p>MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.phillyvoice.com\/skill-game-machines-enforcement-pennsylvania-state-police\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Crackdown on skill game machines could begin next week, Pa. state police warn<\/a><\/p>\n<p>According to the Environmental Protection Agency, Hercules dumped byproducts in a four-acre &#8220;<a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cumulis.epa.gov\/supercpad\/SiteProfiles\/index.cfm?fuseaction=second.Cleanup&amp;id=0200188#bkground\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">solid waste disposal area<\/a>&#8221; on the land, also used by the property&#8217;s previous owner DuPont, for several decades. This waste leeched volatile organic compounds and heavy metals into the soil and groundwater. Hercules&#8217; factory manufactured\u00a0phenol, acetone and compounds used in their production from 1953 until 2010, when the plant was decommissioned.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Geological Survey first detected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2016-09\/documents\/benzene.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">benzene<\/a>, a known carcinogen, in a production well on the site <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/semspub.epa.gov\/work\/02\/550181.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">in 1981<\/a>, leading to additional groundwater testing. Two years later, the Gibbstown property was placed on the Superfund program&#8217;s National Priorities List. Remedial actions, long-term monitoring and inspections have been ongoing for the past four decades.<\/p>\n<p>The New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection sued in 2007 to recoup &#8220;costs they have incurred,\u00a0and will incur&#8221; to clean up the Gibbstown site and additional Hercules properties, citing multiple state laws. The <a data-original-title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.njoag.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/2026-1005_2026-08-18-Hercules-Consent-Judgment-Signed.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">settlement<\/a> resolves its claims, but does not exempt Hercules from past or future remediation costs.
