Sophie Cunningham has spent much of the past year becoming one of the most outspoken players in the WNBA, and her latest appearance ensured that the conversation around her would continue well beyond basketball.

The Indiana Fever guard returned to Missouri for the school’s homecoming football game wearing a hat that read “No Cis Just … Woman,” with “Woman” displayed prominently across the front. When Cunningham was introduced on the field, she pointed toward the message with both hands.

Sophie Cunningham already found someone to compete against after Fever elimination

The gesture immediately drew attention because it closely followed comments she had already made about transgender participation in women’s sports.

“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham previously told ESPN. “I think that I am here to extend love.

“But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”

Cunningham shows no sign of backing away

Those comments had already generated strong reactions from supporters and critics alike. Cunningham later reinforced her position while speaking with reporters, saying she believed the issue came down to protecting girls in competition.

“I think it’s really important to protect children, and that’s little girls who are also involved in that category,” she said. “And so I’ll stand on what I said, and I’ll always believe that.”

Her remarks became a recurring talking point around Fever games, with demonstrators from opposing sides of the debate appearing outside arenas and Cunningham facing boos from some opposing crowds.

She also posed for photographs later in the season with Jennifer Sey and Riley Gaines, both prominent advocates for restrictions on transgender women competing in women’s sports.

The Missouri appearance therefore was unlikely to be viewed as an isolated fashion choice.

Message comes as Fever decision approaches

The timing also adds another angle to the story. Cunningham is heading into unrestricted free agency after playing the 2026 season on a one-year deal with Indiana, leaving her future with the Fever unresolved.

Her role with the team has grown beyond the box score, particularly through her physical style and willingness to defend teammates such as Caitlin Clark. That has also made her one of the more recognizable personalities on the roster.

Whether her public comments have any bearing on Indiana’s offseason decision remains uncertain. Supporters have praised Cunningham for speaking openly about her beliefs, while critics argue that her framing excludes transgender women and contributes to a deeply polarized debate.

Cunningham, however, has consistently presented her position as one centered on fairness and protection in women’s sports. Her latest appearance simply made clear that she still stands by the statement she’s already made.

Sophie Cunningham has spent much of the past year becoming one of the most outspoken players in the…

[73
99,434
post-874057","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-wnba","tag-sports","tag-wnba
["GET
