(Supplied: Dharriwaa Elders Group)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">It was an &#8220;unbelievably exciting&#8221; development for the tiny gastropod, according to Charles Sturt University river ecologist Martin Mallen-Cooper.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The construction of weirs and irrigation systems have been considered one of the contributing factors in the snail&#8217;s decline since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">But Professor Mallen-Cooper said finding the emerging snail colonies also inside irrigation pipes at Louth and Tilpa raised &#8220;fascinating&#8221; possibilities about &#8220;artificial habitats&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a glimmer of hope that you can actually create habitats and add flow, and you&#8217;ll get some of these species back,&#8221;  he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Aboriginal rangers in Walgett confirmed the discovery in September through the Australian Museum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">They plan to explore a second location nearby after a snail shell was found on a riverbank last week.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;Surreal&#8217; discovery decades after disappearance<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">The find has been deeply significant for the Ngarrangarra-li Walaaybaa Rangers in Walgett, who are backed by the Dharriwaa Elders Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">Ranger Tyrin Hickey, 31, had never seen a Darling River snail in the wild before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;It sort of felt surreal,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph_paragraph___QITb\">&#8220;I&#8217;ve seen them on the internet in photos, but in my mind it didn&#8217;t match up, so I was a bit anxious to see if it was the right snail or not.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Three men in hats crouch at the edge of a rocky river bank searching in the water\" class=\"Image_image__5tFYM ContentImage_image__DQ_cq\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/189889cdf0e45a8e3d0e779f9ad00c92.jpeg\" loading=\"lazy\" data-component=\"Image\" data-lazy=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"Typography_base__sj2RP FigureCaption_text__zDxQ5 Typography_sizeMobile12__w_FPC Typography_lineHeightMobile20___U7Vr Typography_regular__WeIG6 Typography_colourInherit__dfnUx\" data-component=\"Typography\">Ngarrangarra-li Walaaybaa Rangers search for the Darling River snail.
