\n\tEXCLUSIVE: Lightdox<\/a> has acquired international sales rights to Nostalgia for the Future<\/a> leading into Film Fest Gent in Belgium where the documentary screens on Sunday.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film narrated by Oscar-nominated actress Charlotte Rampling<\/a> examines the enigmatic filmmaker Chris Marker<\/a> (1921-2012), one of the most influential figures in the history of cinema. The Belgium\u2013Netherlands\u2013Italy co-production, directed by Brecht Debackere<\/a>, made its world premiere in May at the Cannes Film Festival.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cChris Marker, filmmaker, photographer, writer and multimedia artist behind such landmark works as La Jet\u00e9e and Sans Soleil, spent much of his life deliberately avoiding the public eye,\u201d notes a synopsis. \u201cFamously elusive, he rarely gave interviews and would sometimes send photographs of his cats instead of portraits of himself. He once described himself as the \u2018best-known author of unknown films.\u2019<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIn Nostalgia for the Future, Debackere enters the labyrinth of Marker\u2019s legacy through the 550 boxes of his personal archive, now held by the Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que fran\u00e7aise. Guided by Rampling\u2019s distinctive voice, an unnamed archivist moves through photographs, documents, film fragments and personal traces, attempting to reconstruct the man who chose to disappear behind his own images.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tInstead of a traditional biography, the film approaches Marker \u201cthrough the associative logic of his work,\u201d according to a release. \u201cThe archive becomes a living system of memory, while Marker\u2019s images become \u2018time machines,\u2019 fragments through which the past, present and possible futures begin to overlap.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIn a statement, Lightdox CEO Anna Berthollet commented, \u201cChris Marker left behind an archive as enigmatic as the man himself. Brecht Debackere has found a remarkably cinematic way into this world, creating not simply a portrait of Marker, but a meditation on images, memory and the way we imagine the future. A film that speaks directly to what Lightdox looks for: bold, author-driven documentaries with a distinctive cinematic language and the power to open new ways of seeing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBrecht Debackere (Exprmntl) wrote and directed the film. The directors of photography are Jerome De Gerlache, Alexi Van Hennecker, and Ben Grinand; Beppe Leonetti edited the film. The original score is by Rutger Zuydervelt and Niels Borrey. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition to Sunday\u2019s debut at Film Fest Gent, Nostalgia for the Future screens at the festival on Monday and Thursday.
