On Oct. 4, 1957, the first artificial Earth satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched. A decade later on Oct. 10, 1967, the Outer Space Treaty, which forms the basis of international space law, was signed.

Of the roughly 800 people in history to cross the boundary into space, here are several from South Carolina.

Apollo 16 astronaut Charles Duke, who walked on the moon, at the Johnston Peach Blossom Festival in this 2023 file photo.

                                    File/Staff

        Charles Moss Duke Jr.

Duke is the only South Carolinian to set foot on the moon.
