Such warm ocean water helps tropical storms build strength and draw in moisture, adding to their potential rainfall. Because of those conditions, recent forecasts have boosted predictions about the storm’s power.

El Niño’s storm-inhibiting effects aren’t as strong in the Gulf of Mexico as they are in the tropical Atlantic, Klotzbach said. The new hurricane, he added, formed with the help of a cyclonic “gyre” system that can generate storms on either side of Central America. It’s responsible for both Isaias in the Atlantic and for Tropical Depression 20E in the Pacific.

A potentially positive aspect of the forecast is that Isaias is expected to move quickly over land after making landfall, rather than hovering over already-inundated areas.

“Isaias will be moving quickly as it comes onshore, which should hopefully reduce the chances for catastrophic flooding,” Klotzbach said. But, he adds, the storm will still bring dangerous amounts of rain.

This satellite image from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration shows Tropical Storm Isaias off the eastern coast…

[18
23,3,21,19,22,20,25,24
post-875147","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-united-states","tag-america","tag-news","tag-united-states","tag-united-states-of-america","tag-unitedstates","tag-unitedstatesofamerica","tag-us","tag-usa
["GET
