{"id":875363,"date":"2026-10-08T17:18:15","date_gmt":"2026-10-08T17:18:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/875363\/"},"modified":"2026-10-08T17:18:15","modified_gmt":"2026-10-08T17:18:15","slug":"why-are-the-tech-lords-so-bad-at-signing-their-names","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/875363\/","title":{"rendered":"Why are the tech lords so bad at signing their names?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuyanuw9001q27qm05od4972@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            When the biggest names in the artificial intelligence industry signed a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/09\/29\/business\/amodei-huang-karp-trump\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">voluntary safety pact<\/a> alongside President Donald Trump last week, their signatures on the agreement made as much of a stir as their willingness to call AI \u201csuper intelligence\u201d did.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00033b6r0rwdmj4p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On the left side of the signature page, near the midpoint, stood the rhythmic Sharpied peaks and zigzag of Trump\u2019s name: the stylized, well-rehearsed autograph of a proud public performer. Over to the right, where the half-dozen tech leaders had signed on, things looked considerably more chaotic and peculiar.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00043b6rayw95l6p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The column began with Google\u2019s Sundar Pichai, who set down a fluid stroke, embellished with two horizontal lines, two dots and a dash. It ended with Nvidia\u2019s Jensen Huang signing his name with tall, swooping capital letters in a right slant.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00053b6re6zsr8qe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The signatures in between were less elegant. Anthropic\u2019s Dario Amodei and xAI\u2019s Elon Musk scrawled their names in erratic cursive. Meta\u2019s Mark Zuckerberg opened with a clumsy \u201cm\u201d and wobbled into an abstract finishing flourish. OpenAI president Greg Brockman, meanwhile, mustered a shaky, printed \u201cgdb.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">White House Accord on Super Intelligence <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NVNkHmLcbk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/NVNkHmLcbk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 The White House (@WhiteHouse) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/WhiteHouse\/status\/2105292669303791687?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">September 30, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00063b6rx4o1ntto@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The signatories had a collective net worth estimated at more than $1.5 trillion. What to make of the fact that men who aim to control the future appear to have the handwriting of middle school boys signing a classmate\u2019s yearbook? What, if anything, does the seemingly awkward way they wield a pen suggest about the way they might wield their power and influence?\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00073b6r3lgjc5wp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some handwriting experts wondered whether a lack of panache in penmanship was generational.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00083b6rbo8d03e6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Jessie Nucifora, co-president of the New York\u2013based nonprofit Society of Scribes, pointed to the president\u2019s distinctive sign-off as an example. Trump, at 80, is the oldest of all the signatories, followed by Huang, Musk and Pichai, in their 50s and 60s. Zuckerberg and Amodei are in their early 40s. Brockman, 38, is the youngest.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2297756572.jpg\" alt=\"President Donald Trump announced last week that top AI figures signed a pact to \" self-police=\"\" their=\"\" companies=\"\" ai=\"\" models.=\"\" class=\"image__dam-img image__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl00093b6rk8cq30qd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIf you look at Donald Trump\u2019s signature, it\u2019s very elaborate and intricate,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd then I feel like the younger they get, the less they\u2019re caring.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000a3b6r72eku57j@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kelli Fetter, owner and founder of the tutoring service Handwriting Solutions, wrote in an email that the tech leaders with the clumsier signatures \u201care possibly of the generation that never learned cursive, or at least not to the extent of achieving automaticity.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000b3b6rwey2x7sb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWithout learning cursive, people aren\u2019t sure how to sign their name,\u201d Laura Ng, co-president of the Society of Scribes, added. \u201cThey just print it.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000c3b6rfjlhgir6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Before the introduction of the typewriter in the late 20th century, handwriting was primarily a standardized business skill, rather than an avenue for personal expression, said Tamara Plakins Thornton, a historian and author of \u201cHandwriting in America: A Cultural History.\u201d Because contracts, bookkeeping ledgers and correspondences were written by hand, Thornton said people learned to write in uniform handwriting styles \u2014 the flowy, thick and thin strokes of roundhand; the graceful flourishes of Spencerian script; and the simplified Palmer Method, to name a few.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000d3b6r7my63kwq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Signatures, meanwhile, were distinctive. In the medieval and early modern eras, they were more akin to sophisticated monograms, one retired medieval literature professor, who asked not to be named in the story, wrote in an email. Writers would deliberately distort certain letters to convey their identities to close confidantes and obscure them from others.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000e3b6rskny7137@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Some modern signatures still bear these qualities, he added.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000f3b6rc05c3p86@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe president\u2019s famous scrawl is an obvious example, as are Pichai\u2019s, Zuckerberg\u2019s, and Huang\u2019s signatures, reduced to excerpted pen strokes deliberately fused together,\u201d he wrote. \u201cAll of them show signs of formal practice to reproduce a stamp-like image.\u201d Zuckerberg\u2019s, he wrote, \u201cactually ends with what might pass for an early modern Secretary Hand pen flourish of the sort used to make counterfeiting more difficult.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2297777932.jpg\" alt=\"Google CEO Sundar Pichai's signature followed a format common in Europe, calligrapher Laura Ng said.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/ap26272735026464.jpg\" alt=\"Mark Zuckerberg began his moniker with a clumsy \" m=\"\" and=\"\" ended=\"\" with=\"\" an=\"\" abstract=\"\" flourish.=\"\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuydvezx00043b6rk8qfc52g@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Pichai\u2019s signature followed a format common in Europe, Ng said, with a first and last initial, a squiggle for the last name and an underline.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000g3b6rkashr0pb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For much of history, only notable figures were expected to have stylized signatures, Thornton said. <a href=\"https:\/\/daily.jstor.org\/napoleon-signature\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Napoleon Bonaparte<\/a> signed his name with strong, angular lines and dramatic flourishes. And John Hancock\u2019s grand, ornate signature on the Declaration of Independence became so famous that his name is now a term for signatures in general.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000h3b6rhfhhhyze@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            By the 1800s, Thornton said, the public had grown fascinated with the signatures of notable men and women. Publishers sold albums of facsimile autographs, and the interest developed into the field of graphology, the practice of analyzing a person\u2019s handwriting to purportedly discern personality traits. In the late 1800s and the 1900s, as the forces of conformity and anonymity bore down on urban life, Thornton said everyday people began adding flair to their own signatures, too.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000i3b6rwdqph8sc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Most of the tech leaders do not seem to be trying to impress anyone with their style. In the literature professor\u2019s estimation, \u201cBrockman\u2019s lower-case initials are a modest compromise between bare legibility and obscurity,\u201d while \u201cAmodei and Musk reproduce a kind of approximation of their names\u2019 characters in script that appears fatigued and careless.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2297744259.jpg\" alt=\"OpenAI President Greg Brockman offered three printed initials as his signature.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000j3b6rmfy6mux6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Brockman, Amodei and Musk\u2019s signatures, he added, resembled those he saw among high schoolers in the \u201960s \u2014 \u201cusually a sign that they were tired and had little respect for the document they were signing.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000k3b6rfvtnms0s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Beyond aesthetics, is there anything to be gleaned from Huang\u2019s large, looping capitals or from Brockman\u2019s wobbly lowercase initials? Psychologists and handwriting historians alike are skeptical of the field of graphology, but those who specialize in the discipline did offer some thoughts.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000l3b6rwkra30oa@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Emma Bache, a UK-based graphologist, said that Brockman\u2019s hesitant strokes indicated impulsiveness, while Sheila Lowe, president of the American Handwriting Analysis Foundation, wrote in her organization\u2019s newsletter that it signals \u201che is quick to get to the bottom line, cutting away all the non-essentials.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/ap26272819740461.jpg\" alt=\"Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang's signature featured swooping lower loops.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2297246496.jpg\" alt=\"Elon Musk's sign-off showed tall capital letters.\" class=\"image_expandable__dam-img image_expandable__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_expandable__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000m3b6rmf6rmct0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Meanwhile, Bache said the lower zone loops of Huang\u2019s signature indicate that \u201che could be quite charismatic on the outside, but quite ruthless inside,\u201d while Lowe said it signaled \u201ca strong attachment to the past, as well as a desire to include as many associates and friends as possible in his vast number of activities.\u201d Zuckerberg\u2019s loops, meanwhile, reflect a sense of childlike confidence, according to Bache, and a need to push forward, according to Lowe.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000n3b6rgeusz2gl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The disproportionally tall capitals in Musk\u2019s signature, Lowe wrote, are the sign of \u201can emotionally underdeveloped writer who has a great deal of pride in his achievements.\u201d Bache said the large letters convey creative and forward thinking.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000o3b6rl3nc05zx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And Amodei, according to Bache, is an overthinker and a worrier, while Pichai is a highly intelligent strategist.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/gettyimages-2297253363.jpg\" alt=\"Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei scrawled his name in erratic cursive.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1333\" width=\"2000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000p3b6r766nfcif@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Signatures aside, the AI safety accord raised plenty of other questions \u2014 about the lack of accountability and the integrity of the document itself. The pact was not signed in public, and its low-resolution format made it difficult to ascertain whether the document was signed in ink or electronically or whether existing digital signatures were merely affixed to the document, said Jennifer Naso, a forensic document examiner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuyl40es00053b6rtxc2s7ep@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The document also does not include a date or any official government insignia that would establish a relationship between page one and page two, she said. \u201cThis is an official White House document and agreement. You would expect to have the letterhead,\u201d she said. \u201cThis looks like someone just typed it out on Word and printed it from their own computer.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmuycwmbl000q3b6rfb5w28jq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The signatures of these AI leaders might not reveal much about their intentions or their motivations.
