{"id":876063,"date":"2026-10-09T07:48:22","date_gmt":"2026-10-09T07:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/876063\/"},"modified":"2026-10-09T07:48:22","modified_gmt":"2026-10-09T07:48:22","slug":"treasury-yields-really-really-high-but-can-fall-soon-bessent-advisor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/876063\/","title":{"rendered":"Treasury yields &#8216;really, really high&#8217; but can fall soon: Bessent advisor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"InlineVideo-videoThumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/108377804-17914827921791482788-48872813598-1080pnbcnews.jpg\" alt=\"David Zervos: The longer term view on where rates and inflation will be has not moved that much\"\/><\/p>\n<p>U.S. Treasury yields are likely to cool off after a surge to multidecade highs that alarmed bond traders and pressured consumer borrowing power, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/david-zervos\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">David Zervos<\/a>, the Wall Street veteran who recently took a senior role in the Treasury Department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These real yields are really, really high by any historic standard, so I think we have some room to come down in the future,&#8221; Zervos, a counselor to Treasury Secretary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/28\/david-zervos-treasury-department-scott-bessent.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Scott Bessent<\/a>, said Thursday on CNBC&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/power-lunch\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Power Lunch.&#8221;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Zervos&#8217; comments come after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US10Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">10-year<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/quotes\/US30Y\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">30-year<\/a> U.S. Treasury yields have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/08\/us-treasury-yields-30-year-bond-auction.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">marched to 24-year highs<\/a> over recent days. Yields in the global bond market have been on a tear as expectations grow for central banks to hike interest rates and corporations keep borrowing money to build out artificial intelligence infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>Stock Chart IconStock chart icon<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/static-redesign.cnbcfm.com\/dist\/a54b41835a8b60db28c2.svg\" class=\"Collapsible-dismissButton\" alt=\"hide content\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The 10-year U.S. Treasury, 1-month<\/p>\n<p>Demand for popular consumer loans such as home mortgages <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/07\/mortgage-rates-sit-at-nearly-3-year-high-and-demand-continues-to-shrink.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">has dropped<\/a> as borrowing costs have increased alongside Treasury yields.<\/p>\n<p>Zervos said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/federal-reserve\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Federal Reserve<\/a> and other central banks have reacted to short-term rate increases but said the longer-term expectation of rates and inflation hasn&#8217;t changed much.<\/p>\n<p>The Fed last month <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/09\/14\/counting-the-votes-warsh-faces-tough-battle-as-fed-girds-for-expected-rate-hike.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lifted interest rates<\/a> for the first time in three years. Central bank officials signaled this week that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/07\/fed-officials-see-another-hike-coming-but-no-sign-as-to-when-minutes-show.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">more increases could be coming<\/a> before the end of the year.<\/p>\n<p>Fed funds futures traders anticipate a more than 82% likelihood that the central bank will next increase borrowing costs at its December meeting, according to CME&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmegroup.com\/markets\/interest-rates\/cme-fedwatch-tool.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FedWatch<\/a> tool.<\/p>\n<p>Zervos said some of the pressure on global real rates has also come from increased corporate spending on AI. He referred to the technology as &#8220;SI,&#8221; an abbreviation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/10\/03\/trump-jay-clayton-ai-czar.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;super intelligence&#8221;<\/a> \u2014 the term President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/donald-trump\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Donald Trump<\/a> has touted amid mounting local opposition to data centers.<\/p>\n<p>But Zervos, an alumnus of Jefferies and the Fed, characterized these investments as a positive sign for the economy overall and said the resulting impact on yields is a short-term problem. <\/p>\n<p>He said bond yields are likely to come down after the resolution of the energy shock caused by the U.S. war with Iran.
