In 2025, there were 1.20 billion personal and professional trips by residents in the EU<\/a>, a 1.4% increase from 2024 (+17 million trips). Of the total, 848 million were domestic trips (70% of the total) and 264 million were foreign trips within the EU (22%), which means 92% of the trips made by EU residents were intra-EU<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Among EU countries, the highest shares of domestic trips of the total number of trips were recorded in Romania (89%), Spain (87%), and Greece, France and Portugal (each 85%). The lowest share was in Luxembourg at only 5%, followed by Belgium (29%) and Malta (32%). 8% of trips had a destination outside the EU, of which less than half were outside Europe.<\/p>\n

Although domestic trips outnumbered foreign trips, total expenditure was higher for foreign trips. In 2025, EU residents spent \u20ac266.2 billion on domestic trips and \u20ac379.4 billion on foreign trips.\u00a0<\/p>\n

For domestic trips, accommodation and transport made up more than half of the expenditure, 34% (\u20ac90.3 billion) and 21% (\u20ac56.0 billion), respectively. During foreign trips, EU residents spent more on accommodation (35%; \u20ac131.3 billion) and transport (32%; \u20ac121.5 billion) than they did on domestic trips.<\/p>\n
