SHREVEPORT, La. — Area residents looking for a free weekend activity can explore the night sky this Saturday during the Shreveport-Bossier Astronomical Society’s final star party of the fall season.

The event is scheduled from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. at the Shreveport Observatory.

Founded in 1959, the society is among the oldest continuously meeting astronomy clubs in the country. Organizers host free public viewing events each spring and fall to foster community interest in stargazing.

Society representative Karen Lucas said community interest remains high following a strong turnout at their previous gathering.

“Our first fall star party two and a half weeks ago had over 600 people,” Lucas said. “And our next, and last fall star party is going to be this coming Saturday.”

The Shreveport Observatory is located off Highway 1, turning onto Highway 175 and proceeding approximately 1.7 miles to Astronomical Way. Visitors can look for the aluminum dome structure on the left before reaching Ellerbe Road.

Directions, maps, and additional event details are available online at shreveportastronomy.com and through the society’s official Facebook page.
