PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Two police officers were shot multiple times after responding to a call early Saturday morning in West Philadelphia<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A suspect has been taken into custody.<\/p>\n

Commissioner Kevin Bethel said one officer, a 40-year-old with two children, was shot three times.<\/p>\n

The other, a 33-year-old who has five children, was shot 12 times.<\/p>\n

Both officers were taken by police to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where they remain in surgery.<\/p>\n

“I am so damn proud of the men and women who serve in this department. Consistently, they go into danger, and they give their lives for this job,” Bethel said. “And so we ask for those prayers, and we ask for you to support our men and women out there, and what they give for this profession.”<\/p>\n

Police were dispatched to the 100 block of North 52nd Street shortly after 12:20 a.m. for a report of a man with a gun on a porch.<\/p>\n

The officers arrived around 30 minutes later and were shot soon after stepping foot onto the porch.<\/p>\n

Officials say the suspect took off down an alleyway and shot multiple times at other officers, who were not hit.<\/p>\n

There was a search and a neighborhood lockdown as police searched for the gunman, who was eventually taken into custody after falling out of a tree.<\/p>\n

Officers recovered two handguns and a shotgun. Bethel said one of those handguns belonged to an officer who had been shot.<\/p>\n

The suspect’s name has not been released.<\/p>\n
