Hundreds of gallons of used cooking oil, worth thousands of dollars, were taken from a container outside a Massachusetts restaurant during a heist that was thwarted by police early Saturday morning.

Bob Boudreau, the owner of the Anchor Pub and Grill, at 20 Cabot St. in Beverly, called police around 6:15 a.m.

“My neighbor sent me a picture of that van over there with a hose going into my grease dumpster, and asked me, ‘are these guys supposed to be here?’ And I said, ‘No, I’m going to call the cops,'” said Boudreau.

When confronted by neighbors, the three swore at them.

According to Sgt. Erik Abrahamson, officers responded within about one minute of being dispatched and found the three still at work. Approximately 750 gallons of cooking oil were already transferred into large containers in their van.

The three men were taken into custody and did not have any identification. Abrahamson said the men spoke Spanish.

Abrahamson said the oil was split into three containers, each holding about $1,250 worth. He said the oil can be sold on the black market and converted into biodiesel. The current average price of diesel in Massachusetts is $6.33 per gallon, up from $3.82 one year ago, according to AAA.

An attempted theft of cooking oil at the same business about two months ago was reported, but the suspects ran away before police arrived.

BEVERLY, Mass. — Hundreds of gallons of used cooking oil, worth thousands of dollars, were taken from a…

[2
369164,31431,369170,369157,369166,256084,369169,84552,55639,4,450,369160,73371,369168,369158,369171,236615,369165,369167,240426,451,9079,90857,6135,2001,36255,3,369159,15554,1583,121302,6087,369161,11763,369163,369162,452,453,198255,19849,198975
post-877650","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-breaking-news","tag-750-gallons","tag-aaa","tag-anchor-pub","tag-anchor-pub-and-grill","tag-attempted-theft","tag-beverly","tag-beverly-restaurant","tag-biodiesel","tag-black-market","tag-breaking-news","tag-breakingnews","tag-cabot-st","tag-container","tag-cooking-oil-heist","tag-cooking-oil-theft","tag-current-average-price","tag-diesel-prices","tag-early-saturday","tag-erik-abrahamson","tag-gallon","tag-headlines","tag-hundred","tag-identification","tag-man","tag-massachusetts","tag-neighbors","tag-news","tag-oil-heist","tag-owner","tag-police","tag-police-response","tag-saturday-morning","tag-sgt-erik-abrahamson","tag-spanish","tag-suspicious-people","tag-thwarted-theft","tag-top-stories","tag-topstories","tag-used-cooking-oil","tag-van","tag-worth-thousand
["GET
