And with Halloween right around the corner, it makes sense that momentum continued Friday as the supernatural, unnerving thriller \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/other-mommy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_other-mommy\" data-tag=\"other-mommy\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Other Mommy<\/a>\u201d easily claimed the top spot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tThe Universal movie, produced by Blumhouse-Atomic Monster, generated $12.6 million from 3,365 North American theaters on Friday. It\u2019s a strong start for the Jessica Chastain-led horror, which carries an $18 million price tag.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tBased on Josh Malerman\u2019s 2024 novel \u201cIncidents Around the House,\u201d the horror film follows a paranormal entity that takes on the appearance of a young girl\u2019s mother and begins haunting their home. Chastain plays Ursula, the real mom, but also the titular \u201cOther Mommy,\u201d a terrifying entity who looks identical to Ursula. Jay Duplass plays Ursula\u2019s husband Russell and Arabella Olivia Clark plays Bela, her daughter. The cast also includes Dichen Lachman, Arian Moayed, Karen Allen, Sean Kaufman and more. \u201cOther Mommy\u201d looks to add $28 million by Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFellow new release \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/the-social-reckoning\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-social-reckoning\" data-tag=\"the-social-reckoning\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The Social Reckoning<\/a>\u201d landed in fourth place on Friday with $2.15 million from 2,606 North American theaters. The movie is expected to make $6 million domestically through the weekend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAaron Sorkin\u2019s follow-up to 2010\u2019s \u201cThe Social Network\u201d (which grossed $224 million globally and went on to win four Oscars), the corporate drama has been afflicted with mixed reviews since its premiere earlier this week; <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/reviews\/the-social-reckoning-review-1236904146\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Variety\u2019s Guy Lodge <\/a>called the film \u201ca diverting-enough, clever-enough, true-enough examination\u201d that serves as \u201ca reminder that \u2018The Social Network\u2019 was both Sorkin\u2019s best writing achievement and\u2026 his least characteristic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cThe Social Reckoning\u201d follows Facebook\u2019s 2021 leak by whistleblower Frances Haugen (Mikey Madison). Jeremy Strong plays Mark Zuckerberg and Jeremy Allen White plays Jeff Horwitz, the Wall Street Journal reporter who digs through thousands of pages of internal documents, which culminated in his Pulitzer Prize-winning reporting, \u201cThe Facebook Files.\u201d Bill Burr, Betty Gilpin and Billy Magnussen also star.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAmazon MGM\u2019s psycho-thriller \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/verity\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Verity<\/a>\u201d landed in second place on Friday, grossing $4 million. Adapted from Colleen Hoover\u2019s bestselling book of the same name and starring Anne Hathaway, Josh Hartnett and Dakota Johnson, the film looks to add $14.2 million by Sunday, bringing its domestic total to $56.6 million.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tComing in right ahead of \u201cThe Social Reckoning,\u201d Columbia Pictures\u2019 \u201cResident Evil\u201d pulled in another $2.32 million on Friday, good enough for a third-place finish. The Zach Cregger-directed zombie horror is targeting another $8.2 million for the weekend, bringing its cumulative domestic gross to $138.37 million. Austin Abrams stars as a medical courier in the video game adaptation who must contend with a zombie outbreak while making a delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFinally, in fifth, was Paramount Pictures\u2019 \u201cThe Heart of the Beast.\u201d The Brad Pitt-led adventure film grossed $1.96 million on Friday and should pull in another $6.91 million by Sunday, bringing its cumulative gross to $49.47 million.
