{"id":877872,"date":"2026-10-10T21:42:10","date_gmt":"2026-10-10T21:42:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/877872\/"},"modified":"2026-10-10T21:42:10","modified_gmt":"2026-10-10T21:42:10","slug":"ldf-forcefully-denounces-u-s-secretary-of-defense-decision-to-livestream-execution-by-firing-squad","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us\/877872\/","title":{"rendered":"LDF Forcefully Denounces U.S. Secretary of Defense Decision to Livestream Execution by Firing Squad"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>          Read a PDF of our statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/10.9.2026-Livestream-Execution-Statement.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">here<\/a>.          <\/p>\n<p>United States Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth announced that the military\u00a0will livestream the\u00a0firing squad execution of\u00a0Nidal Hasan,\u00a0a\u00a0wheelchair-bound\u00a0man\u2014the first\u00a0military execution by firing squad\u00a0since World War II.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If\u00a0the military carries out its plan, this will\u00a0be the\u00a0first\u00a0livestreamed execution\u00a0in United States history.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In response,\u00a0the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/naacpldf.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Legal Defense Fund<\/a>\u00a0(LDF)\u00a0issued\u00a0the following statement:\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe era of lynchings where white people jeered and made an event out of the torture of a Black person is echoed today by the grim announcement of a televised shooting sponsored by the government.\u00a0This is an unprecedented,\u00a0barbaric\u00a0decision that makes the killing\u00a0of a man\u00a0a\u00a0point of\u00a0sordid\u00a0spectacle.\u00a0Secretary Hegseth has chosen to\u00a0undermine the sanctity of\u00a0human life\u00a0in a vile attempt to\u00a0politically exploit\u00a0what is poised to be a harrowing\u00a0execution.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dehumanization of people of\u00a0color, and people from the\u00a0Middle\u00a0East\u00a0in particular, is\u00a0once again on full\u00a0display through this decision.\u00a0The government\u2019s opportunistic use of a man\u2019s brutal killing turns an already grotesque injustice into a national spectacle that degrades our country and degrades us all.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite the barbarism\u00a0of this decision,\u00a0the U.S. death penalty is waning and has declined to a 40-year-old low.\u00a0Read\u00a0more\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/press-release\/u-s-death-row-population-drops-below-2000-for-first-time-since-1980s\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">###\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 1940, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/naacpldf.org\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Legal Defense Fund (LDF)<\/a>\u00a0is the nation\u2019s first civil rights legal organization.
