\n\tShane Gillis<\/a> returned to host \u201cSaturday Night Live<\/a>\u201d for the third time since his 2019 firing, emerging in a matching black T-shirt and pants for a meandering monologue about needing to lose weight and being miserable (and trying to be unthreatening to women) while hiking.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI tried to go to a public gym. Going to the public gym as a fat guy, especially in New York, is a nightmare, dude,\u201d he opined. \u201cIt\u2019s just the hottest gay guys you\u2019ve ever seen. They\u2019re jacked and they look at me, like, \u2018Yeah, right.\u2019 \u2018I know, dude.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cAlso, I haven\u2019t been to the gym in so long I didn\u2019t know women just dress like whores now?\u201d he cracked to groans from the in-studio audience. \u201cLook, I\u2019m sorry, there\u2019s no other way to describe [it]. Have you seen it? I\u2019ve seen it. You\u2019ve seen the shorts? They\u2019re those neon, like, artificial vape-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don\u2019t look! You\u2019re not allowed to look. For real, don\u2019t look, because they are filming. I\u2019m in the background of ten TikToks right now [grinning].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThere was more, of course. Gillis riffed on his \u201ctwo big, fat-bitch sisters\u201d who would heckle him by saying \u201cthe meanest things,\u201d like calling him \u201cbitch hips,\u201d and poked fun at how his receding hairline is starting to make him resemble a certain fascist leader.<\/p>\n<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ll tell you the thing that I\u2019m really bothered by is: I\u2019ve balded directly into an Adolf Hitler<\/a> haircut,\u201d he joked. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not good. Because I give a lot of speeches and the front falls down a lot, and there\u2019s no way to adjust it without looking exactly like [Hitler]. It\u2019s the only way. I\u2019m not going to [brush it to the side], that\u2019s gay. That\u2019s it: You\u2019re either gay or you\u2019re Hitler, and isn\u2019t that where we\u2019re at as a country?\u201d There were few laughs, and then it abruptly ended. Gillis has shown considerable comedy chops in his stand-up specials and hosting the ESPYs, but nailing an \u201cSNL<\/a>\u201d monologue seems to be elusive for him.<\/p>\n

\n\tGillis, 38, has had a very rocky \u201cSNL\u201d journey.<\/p>\n

\n\tBack in Sept. 2019, he was announced as one of the sketch-comedy show\u2019s newest cast members, alongside Chloe Fineman and Bowen Yang. He was fired five days later after clips resurfaced from Gillis\u2019s podcast where he mocked Asians and used anti-gay slurs \u2014 which looked even worse given that Yang had just made history as the first \u201cSNL\u201d cast member of full Asian descent (and third openly-gay male cast member ever). Gillis subsequently made a name for himself sans \u201cSNL\u201d with a popular podcast, two stand-up specials, creating and starring in the Netflix series \u201cTires\u201d and a role in the upcoming biopic \u201cMadden.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cSNL\u201d creator Lorne Michaels<\/a> would later admit that he was forced to give Gillis the boot against his wishes by NBC brass, telling<\/a> The Wall Street Journal, \u201cThat was very strong from the people in charge. And obviously I was not on that side, but I understood it.\u201d And since then, it seems that Michaels has been on a mission to make good with Gillis, offering him the role of Donald Trump for \u201cSNL\u2019s\u201d 50th season (Gillis turned it down) as well as allowing him to host the show three times.
