\u200cBillionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has said he would price his Starlink satellite internet service affordably \u2060in India to take \u2060on Mukesh Ambani\u2019s low-cost Reliance Jio, escalating his attacks on the rival tycoon days before Jio\u2019s parent launches the country\u2019s largest-ever initial public offering (IPO).<\/p>\n
Jio Platforms, \u2060which owns the telecom arm, is targeting a valuation of $106bn in the offering. Much like SpaceX-owned Starlink, Jio\u2019s satellite venture is also awaiting final \u2060security clearance to launch.<\/p>\n
Cheap data is the playbook that built Jio in India, and the one Musk has used in markets like Kenya to unsettle local telecom players. SpaceX now plans to enter the mobile carrier market itself, starting in \u200cthe United States.<\/p>\n
Musk did not specify prices for India, where mobile data costs about rupees 7.74 ($0.08) per gigabyte, among the lowest in the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cObviously, if Starlink is too expensive in India, no one will buy it, so SpaceX will need to make pricing affordable,\u201d he said in a post on his social media platform X on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe reality is that \u2060competition would greatly benefit the average citizen in India by \u2060giving them more choices, as it always does. Ambani\u2019s profits will be lower, but he is not going out of business,\u201d Musk added.<\/p>\n

Musk\u2019s remarks were the latest in \u2060a series of X posts in which\u00a0he accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi\u2019s government and Ambani of stalling Starlink\u2019s entry \u2060into one of the world\u2019s biggest internet markets to \u2060favour market leader Jio.<\/p>\n
The posts have marked a sharp turn for Musk, who has long enjoyed a warm public rapport with Modi.<\/p>\n
India\u2019s government has denied any bias in its approval process, \u200cnoting that the three satellite ventures seeking to launch, including Starlink\u2019s and Jio\u2019s, are all awaiting final security clearance.<\/p>\n
Late on Friday, Musk taunted Ambani directly, addressing \u200chim as \u201cPrime \u200cMinister Ambani\u201d and asking whether he would \u201cconsider allowing Starlink to compete\u201d.<\/p>\n
