Bruce Springsteen didn’t ever claim to be ‘The Boss’, no matter how much people referred to him as such.

Some of the biggest bands in the world only hope to have a leader with his same sense of urgency whenever he plays, but the reason why he ends up working that hard isn’t because of trying to put on a show. He had a lot of fire in his belly when he first started making music, but there are some people that seemed to say it all for the country a lot better than he could even when he was writing the ultimate everyman anthems.

Because as much as ‘The Boss’ loves being an American, there are more than a few times that he has been critical of his country. ‘We Take Care of Our Own’ is more than a little bit critical of how things aren’t as compassionate as they seem, and for those people that have had their ears clogged for the past 40 years, you might be surprised to learn that ‘Born in the USA’ isn’t, in fact, the flag-waving anthem that people use to soundtrack barbecues on every Independence Day.

Springsteen knew that there were problems with his country, but holding people accountable is what patriots do. No one would have thought about making records that were as good as his, but being brave enough to say what needed to be said was one of the reasons why so many of his tunes worked so well. He was willing to say as much as he could, but the real faces of America in his eyes were the ones that embodied everything about the country.

Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie had been fighting the good fight for the little guy ever since they first picked up guitars, and without Bob Dylan turning to rock and roll, Springsteen probably wouldn’t have had the same bravery to eventually work on songs all about the fallout that came after 9/11. But for all of his empathy for the people of New York and anyone affected by terrorism, his Jersey roots were never going to leave him.

All of his songs were about looking out at the vast landscape on the other side of the highway and trying to find an answer beyond the traditional blue-collar jobs. Anyone else can try their best to look at the bigger problems with the world and react to them, but all of the heart, sadness, and compassion that Springsteen felt in their lives can all be traced back to listening to Frank Sinatra when he was a kid.

‘Ol Blue Eyes’ was far from the first pop singer to wear his heart on his sleeve, but Springsteen felt that what he had to say every time he sipped his liquor onstage was as much a part of the country as the American flag, saying, “There are only a few artists whose work transcends genres and ascends to a level of national poetry and Frank Sinatra stands high among them. When I hear Frank, I hear America, but I hear New Jersey. Always with a chip on his shoulder. The deep soul of hard times, and plenty of good times and sexy times.”

Further reading: From The Vault

It’s not like Sinatra didn’t feel the same way right back at Springsteen, either. When the heartland rocker eventually found himself shoulder to shoulder with the vocal legend at his house, it was almost as if Sinatra was the wise uncle to what he was doing, only in Springsteen’s case, the lessons that Sinatra had to teach had more to do with his manner of singing than whether or not ‘The Boss’ was coming for his crown.

And while ‘The Boss’ could justifiably look at himself as the reigning king of Jersey every time he goes back home, Sinatra will always loom larger than anything else. Because as much as people love to talk about the stories in songs like ‘Born to Run’, there aren’t many people who are going to be able to take a song like ‘My Way’, turn it inside out and leave you absolutely heartbroken every single time they sing it.
